One of Donald Trump’s aides during his time in the White House has ripped into him for not really caring about his party — only himself and what he can get.

Cassidy Hutchinson, who had a ringside seat during the tumultuous Trump administration, said that although she felt in the past that Trump was unfit for the presidency, both she and Republican voters went ahead and chose him anyway. “I am not proud of that,” she said in an interview with Jen Psaki on MSNBC.

Hutchinson said in her reasoning for feeling she was wrong to have helped Trump get to power was that: “Donald Trump is not a Republican. Yes, maybe by name, he considers himself a Republican. But Donald Trump cares more about the authoritarian role than he does the rule of law.”

Hutchison, who has written a book about the Trump years and the fallout from the 2020 presidential election, titled Enough, also said Trump does not uphold the Constitution, instead “leveraging it for his own power.”

Trump or Country

The author says she felt compelled to choose between loyalty to her boss in the White House and also to the United States, when she witnessed Trump’s attempts to stay in power following the 2020 election that he lost to Joe Biden but refused to concede defeat.

January 6 Testimony

Hutchinson testified last year before a House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, riots at the US Capitol. The attack at the seat of US democracy erupted after Trump urged his supporters to protest the election result there, just as Biden was being confirmed the winner. Five people died as a result of the violence and around 1,000 were arrested.

She said Trump’s main advisors told him of the potential for violence breaking out on Capitol Hill and that he himself wanted to join them in the protest, but ended up not going out of fear for his own safety.

Trump’s 2020 Indictments

Federal and Georgia prosecutors have charged Trump, 77, with attempting to overturn the result of the 2020 election and block the peaceful transfer of power. Charges in Georgia specifically center on “racketeering,”and many of Trump’s former lawyers are co-defendants but have taken plea deals to avoid prison terms.

The ex-president has also been hit with indictments relating to alleged mishandling of classified government documents and allegedly making “hush money” payments to cover up an alleged affair with a former adult film star. Trump has pleaded not guilty and claims Democrats trying to prevent him from becoming president again are behind the charges.

Trump’s Soaring Popularity

Despite the legal hurdles Trump is facing, he remains overwhelmingly popular among Republican voters. The latest national polling puts him at just over 60 percent of voter support compared to polling in the teens and single digits for the rest of the GOP pack hoping for the party’s nomination for 2024. The field includes Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley.

Trump a ‘Democracy Threat’

In her MSNBC interview, Hutchinson suggested that democracy in America would be in peril should Trump get back to the White House — echoing recent remarks by former Republican senator Liz Cheney, who said the former president is the “single most dangerous threat” to the US.

Hutchinson said she would not be voting for Trump next November and that people should choose incumbent Joe Biden “if they want our democracy to survive.”

Trump ‘Uniquely Unsuited’ for Presidency

Hutchinson blasted her former boss as being “uniquely unsuited for the Office of the Presidency and should be nowhere near the Oval Office ever again.”

Biden’s Big Issue

President Biden is the leading contender for the Democratic Party’s nomination, with around 70 percent voter support and with Vice President Kamala Harris as his running mate. But at 81 years of age and having suffered recent stumbles, trips and gaffes, many are wondering if he should give way to a younger candidate.

A new Harvard/Harris poll shows that the majority of people (66 percent) believe Biden is too old to be president and should retire. At 77 and having suffered his own recent gaffes, Trump is also facing calls to step aside in favor of more youthful candidates — music to the ears of the Florida governor and others in the GOP field.
