Former President Donald Trump’s loyal fans have recently launched an online attack against former U.S. representative Liz Cheney, calling for her to be jailed and asserting that she is “guilty of treason.”

A “Multi-Part Conspiracy”

Cheney, now a professor at the University of Virginia, served as vice-chair of the House committee panel that investigated the attack on the Capitol on January 6. They decided in December of last year that Trump was party to a “multi-part conspiracy” to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Trump Should Have Been Barred

The 845-page report also alleged that Trump failed to stop his supporters from attacking the Capitol, and advised that Trump should be barred from holding office ever again.

Trump Solely To Blame

In the opening executive summary of the report, its condemnation of Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election was duly asserted: “That evidence has led to an overriding and straight-forward conclusion: the central cause of January 6th was one man, former President Donald Trump, who many others followed. None of the events of January 6th would have happened without him.”

Cheney’s Condemnation

In Cheney’s foreword for the report, she declared: “From the beginning, Donald Trump’s fraud allegations were concocted nonsense, designed to prey upon the patriotism of millions of men and women who love our country.”

Trump’s Refusal To Denounce Supporters “Shameful”

Cheney also highlighted Trump’s failure to tell his followers to back down, writing: “Among the most shameful findings from our hearings was this: President Trump sat in the dining room off the Oval Office watching the violent riot at the Capitol on television. For hours, he would not issue a public statement instructing his supporters to disperse and leave the Capitol, despite urgent pleas from his White House staff and dozens of others to do so.”

The vice-chair also called Trump’s intentions to “defeat the transfer of Presidential power” a “corrupt” plan. She surmised: “No man who would behave that way at that moment in time can ever serve in any position of authority in our nation again. He is unfit for any office.”

Footage to Aid Trump Supporters’ Claims

Specific outrage towards Cheney was sparked after House Speaker Mike Johnson said he would release “thousands of hours” worth of footage from the riot, which Trump supporters believe will reinforce the claims that the Capitol riot was a peaceful protest rather than a violent one.

Evidence of Corruption

The anger towards Cheney was ignited after she responded to a conspiracy theory posted on ‘X’. The video showed Kevin Lyons, who has recently been sentenced to four years in prison for the attack, apparently flashing official government identification at a camera.

A Conspiracy Theory

Republican politician Derrick Evans, who initially shared the video, asked: “Is this person flashing a badge? If so, this would prove there were undercover federal agents disguised as MAGA. I was thrown in solitary confinement for peacefully protesting. I just want the truth to be known.”

Government ID or Vape?

Whilst the theory has since been debunked that Lyons was actually holding a vape, people were quick to comment on the video. Republican Mike Lee shared the video and wrote: “I can’t wait to ask FBI Director Christopher Wray about this at our next oversight hearing. I predict that, as always, his answers will be 97% information-free.”

Cheney Calls Out Conspiracy Theorists

In response, Cheney wrote: “You’re a lawyer, Mike. You’re capable of understanding the scores of J6 verdicts & rulings in our federal courts. E.g. https://justice.gov/usao-dc/capitol-breach-cases…. You didn’t object to electors on J6 because you knew what Trump was doing was unconstitutional & you know what you’re doing now is wrong.”

Public Backlash

Cheney’s response garnered much criticism, particularly from Republicans who felt she betrayed Trump. One user responded to Cheney’s post: “Liz Cheney and every other member of the fraudulent J6 committee needs to be thrown in jail for the rest of their lives.”

Cheney “Guilty of Treason and Manslaughter”

One person alleged that Cheney and former U.S. representative Adam Kinzinger “are guilty of Treason and Manslaughter,” attributing blame to them for the suicide of Matthew Perna, who took part in the riot against the Capitol.

Where Has Cheney Been?

Responding to Cheney’s comments that Trump’s recent speech is demonstrative of “Nazi Propaganda”, one person asked: “Where was Liz when this all started? Decades of the Southern Strategy led us here, and she was perfectly fine with it as long as she benefited. Not a peep all this time.”

“She’s a Terrible Person”

Another person echoed a similar sentiment regarding Cheney’s previous loyalty to Trump: “When Liz Cheney was in office she voted with Trump over 90% of the time. She is a terrible person. Just look at her voting record.”

Cheney’s Rebellion Against the “Orange Furor”

One person partly defended Cheney: “At least she stood up against sedition by her own party, and rebelled against the Orange Furor. If we can’t even give the slightest bit of credit to Cheney for actions against fascism then we’re not vastly more open-minded than Republicans (like we know we are, so act like it). Doesn’t make her a great person, but it does make her and Kinzinger outliers to the fascism of the GOP.”

Cheney’s Hypocrisy

Another user declared Cheney’s actions against Trump as hypocritical: “While she’s telling it like it is with regards to Trump, she’s not taking ownership of her role in this whole mess. You can’t help build a bomb, and then disavow responsibility when it blows up.”
