Sarah Matthews, the ex-deputy press secretary for Trump, shared her insights on her tenure in the Trump administration amid the Capitol riots during an exclusive interview with WKYC (Channel 3) in Cleveland. She expressed her belief that Trump’s potential candidacy for the 2024 Presidency appears highly “orchestrated” in a bid to “spin” his legal troubles. Furthermore, Matthews suggested that a Trump versus Biden political face-off in 2024 would be a “rematch from hell.”

The conversation commenced by delving into Matthews’ perspective on the gag order in Trump’s federal case in Washington, DC, related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election. Matthews began her interview by stating, “I’ve always believed that Donald Trump got into the 2024 election because he wanted to be a political candidate so that he could spin all of these legal troubles that he knew were going to catch up to him…And so it all looks very orchestrated to me why he’s running.”

Matthews then went on to explain that her “fellow witnesses” who testified before the January 6th committee, Shaye Moss and Ruby Freeman, who had been accused by Trump and his followers of conspiracy and switching out ballots, had been harassed by “the far right and online trolls” “when there was no basis to them, and it ruined these women’s lives,” she added.

“They literally weren’t able to leave their house. They were scared for their lives. They were getting death threats and basically had to become recluses,” Matthews went on to explain.

She then stated that is why the gag order was needed and further reiterated that Trump didn’t care about how “his words affect people and they have very real consequences and impact on people’s lives.” She concluded her answer to the question by stating the gag order in the federal trial was “the correct decision.”

No One Wants Two Old Men

Matthews was then asked about her views on a potential rematch between Trump and Biden in 2024. “I think many Americans would agree with me with the sentiment that this is essentially the rematch from hell. No one wants to have these two old men running against each other again,” she said.

Odds of Winning Would Increase Without Trump

Matthews stated that, in her view, a rematch looked very likely. She also said that she wished that “Republicans would put up another option because I think that if we ran anyone else against Joe Biden, our odds of winning would go up considerably.”

Matthews then stated if it did come to a rematch between Biden and Trump, she would vote for Biden. “I don’t really want to see another Joe Biden presidency. But if Donald Trump’s a nominee, then unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll have much of a choice in who I support and vote for.”

Matthews Resigned Over Trump’s Actions

In 2021, Matthews provided testimony to the Jan. 6 committee, recounting her tenure as a former deputy press secretary in the White House during the insurrection. She expressed how Donald Trump’s actions on that day were so repulsive to her that she decided to resign that very night.

People Scared to Tell the Truth

During the exclusive interview with WKYC, she was asked about her experiences and testimony. Matthews declared in her interview that she felt she had to testify, but also stated that many who were in more senior positions “were too scared of Donald Trump or too concerned with their own ambition and job prospects to come forward and tell the truth.”

Sane People Would Have Come Forward

She also called out her Republican colleagues who stayed quiet about the events, stating, “I just think that any normal, sane person would have come forward after witnessing the events of Jan. 6 and shared what they knew.”

“But I guess that’s Washington for you. More people are concerned with their own jobs and ambition,” she said.

Trump’s Actions Were Deeply Disturbing

Matthews previously released a statement announcing her resignation on Jan. 6. She said,” “I was honored to serve in the Trump administration and proud of the policies we enacted. As someone who worked in the halls of Congress, I was deeply disturbed by what I saw today. I’ll be stepping down from my role, effective immediately. Our nation needs a peaceful transfer of power.”

Testimony Altered Her Future

In her interview, Matthews reflected on her resignation, stating that after feeling like she had a career ahead of her, the Capitol riots, her resignation and testimony “altered that course very quickly.” She also stated that she was aware that her resignation impacted her and her career prospects.

Putting a Target on Her Back

“I knew that speaking out against Trump world in such a wide platform like that would put a target on my back and sign me up for harassment and threats and vitriol.” Matthews explained it was a “scary” position to be in.

A Horrific Day for Our Country

She then declared that Trump lost the election but called out Republicans for not being willing to admit it. “…a lot of Republicans are not willing to say that Jan. 6 was a horrific day for our country and that Donald Trump caused it because of his refusal to accept the results of the election,” she stated.

“Those people would not have been at the Capitol that day, if Donald Trump had not tweeted out that they should go,” she added.

You’re Very Special

“And in that video, he said to these people that, ‘We love you, you’re very special.’” Matthews explained that Trump had called the rioters “special” after watching the violence, describing it as the moment she knew she had to resign.

Matthews, a witness for the Jan. 6 Committee, posted on X a year after the Capitol riots. Part of her post read, “Make no mistake, the events on the 6th were a coup attempt, a term we’d use had they happened in any other country, and former President Trump failed to meet the moment.”
