World Eightball Pool Federation Bans Trans Women From Competing

The World Eightball Pool Federation (WEPF), the national governing body of the sport, reportedly modified its stringent policy prohibiting trans women from participating in the women’s division to one that is entirely inclusive and does not discriminate on the basis of a person’s sex assigned at birth, according to the Daily Mail. In accordance with the guideline, transgender athletes may also be tested to ensure their testosterone levels meet the standards set by the International Olympic Committee.

Ban Possibly Due to Legal Threats From Female Players

Only eight weeks had passed since WEPF published the previous policy, and many have purportedly surmised that legal threats were the reason for the reversal. Numerous cis-women athletes have opposed trans women competing against them after the change.

Pinches’ Brother Lauds Her Refusal to Compete

Barry, Pinches’ brother, praised his sister for declining to compete. According to the Mail, he said on social media, “Full credit and great respect to my sister Lynne Pinches yesterday for taking a stand and not playing in the biggest match of her pool-playing life because she feels it’s so unfair to have to compete against a trans woman.”

Haynes Wins the Championship by Default

Pinches’ choice to forfeit meant that Haynes was the champion by default. Pinches stayed behind to take pictures with her runner-up prize. Pinches is among the increasing number of cisgender female athletes who decline to participate with their transgender colleagues or rivals. Because one of their teammates was transgender, three members of the English women’s fishing team declined to participate in the world championships in October.

With Becky Lee Birtwhistle Hodges on the squad, Heather, the 66-year-old captain of the team, told the Daily Mail that the group had already been “humiliated.” The global championships in 2018 “wasn’t a nice situation, mainly because all the other countries wouldn’t speak to us,” the speaker asserted.

For the Record This Post Is About Fairness in Women’s Sport

“For the record, this post is about fairness in women’s sport, that is all,” Pinches’ brother continued.”I have no problem whatsoever if somebody wants to identify themselves as whatever they want to be and I have nothing against Harriet Haynes. Peace and goodwill to all.”

This Is a Defence

The fifth-ranked English pool player in the world and 14-time national champion Alexandra Cunha adds, “It’s important to understand this is not an attack on anyone, this is a defence.” “This is me defending what I know to be fair and there is absolutely no fairness in allowing biological males to play in the women’s league.”

Pool Is Everything to Me

“Pool is everything to me” Cunha states. “I fell in love with it at the age of 17 in Lisbon and have spent decades fighting against men to be allowed to play against other women on an even playing field. Now I feel like I have to go into battle again.”

“But this isn’t about me, it’s not even about pool. It’s about the way women’s sport is under siege from transgender players who were born male and have all the advantages that enable them to dominate biological women.”

Standing only 5 feet 2 inches tall, Cunha is a quick-witted, quick-witted woman with a degree in educational science and a keen sense of humor. She calls herself a “feisty Latina.” Despite having spent eleven years living in Britain, she is still the Portugal women’s team captain.

Men Would Shout at Me That I Wasn’t Welcome

“Back when I was a teenager I had no money to play so I would sit on a chair all day and just watch, for hours and hours. When I did pick up a cue, the men would shout at me that I wasn’t welcome and that I should go home and do some laundry,” she remembers.

Cunha Won’t ”Play Against Anyone Who Has an Adam’s Apple in a Female Category”

“Within five years I could beat them all. I still play men, but in open categories. I will not play against anyone who has an Adam’s apple in a female category.”

More than sixty professional female pool players banded together through a WhatsApp support group to fight the move within a week after WEPF’s latest statement. And in Norwich, Cunha, a well-known figure in the sport, got in touch with the Ultimate Pool Group right once to declare that she would stay in her seat and not play in the women’s division against anyone who was born male.

All I Got Was a Request for My Bank Details

“I naively thought they would speak to me – instead all I got was a request for my bank details so they could return my 2024 fee” Cunha claims. “It was shocking. I felt angry but also sad that things had come to this in the sport I love.”

Cunha’s close friend Lynne Pinches, 50, who is the sister of snooker champion Barry Pinches, pledged to follow suit once she made her announcement. By coincidence, she drew with the extremely successful transgender player Harriet Haynes in the Ladies Champion of Champions national event final in Denbighshire, Wales, two weeks ago.

Pinches, a Norwich resident as well, declined to participate, shaking Haynes’s hand before leaving the crowded playing hall and losing the game. She wept the entire night. The narrative spread over the world.

Cunha Declares She Is ”So Proud of Lynne”

Cunha exclaims, “I’m so proud of Lynne. She’s not ranked as high as I am and it was only her fourth ever final so it was a huge sacrifice but we all believe it was worth it. Some principles are worth more than money, titles or trophies.”

Haynes Issues Statement in Response

IOC classifies cue sports like pool, billiards, and snooker as “precision sports,” so gender has no bearing on them. Haynes, for her part, issued a statement through her lawyers emphasizing this point. She also said, “All the protest this past weekend has done is to show that bigotry is alive and well and that misinformation regarding the situation has run rife.”
