Following statements made over the weekend, Donald Trump is once again being compared to Adolf Hitler. MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough slammed Trump, asserting: “We’re just going full-on Hitler.”
“Radical Left Thugs”: Trump Calls Out Leftists
On Saturday, Trump gave a speech at his rally in New Hampshire where he spoke about his opposition. In his bid to win the 2024 election, Trump claimed on X how he aims to remove “the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country.”
“They’ll Do Anything, Whether Legally or Illegally”
In his speech, Trump once again called out the opposition, asserting they will “do anything, whether legally or illegally, to destroy America and to destroy the American dream.”
The “Real Threat”
Trump continued to slam the left, telling his followers that “the real threat isn’t the radical right.” Instead: “The real threat is from the radical left, and it’s growing every day.”
Characteristics of a Leader
Trump went on to list characteristics he believes to be befitting of a leader. He said: “If you have a capable, smart, tough, leader, Russia, China, North Korea… they’re not gonna want to play with us.”
“Fascist Talk”
“Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough hit back at Trump’s speech, noting his “fascist talk” that is all too reminiscent of Hitler’s views.
A Severe Comparison
Scarborough continued that Trump “reveals more of himself”, characterizing the former president’s speech as “going full-on Hitler talking about vermin.”
Trump’s Ideals
Discussing concerns from the Anti-Defamation League, Scarborough asserted that he found it “fascinating” that Trump would talk of “poisoning the blood of America” when considering “[we are] a nation of immigrants.”
“Racial Purity”
He asserted that Trump’s views seem to be calling for “racial purity”, a dangerous echoing of Hitler’s way of thinking.
“Out of the Nazi Playbook”: A Familiar Rhetoric
Trump’s remarks have sparked similar outrage online due to his use of words like “vermin”. The editor-in-chief of Ohio Capital Journal took to social media to denounce Trump’s words as “rhetoric literally out of the Nazi playbook.”
Trump Backs up His Speech
Trump posted a similar statement on Truth Social, where he reiterated his aims to “root out” the “Communists, Marxists, Fascists, and Radical Left Thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our Country, lie, steal, and cheat on Elections.”
“Radical Left Lunatics”
He ended his post with the assertion: “Despite the hatred and anger of the Radical Left Lunatics who want to destroy our Country, we will MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
“Rebirth of Hitler”: The Internet’s Response
Many people agree with Scarborough’s comparison of Trump to Hitler. One person noted how Trump “almost quotes Hitler verbatim.” They continued: “We’ve got the rebirth of Hitler happening and they are asleep at the wheel.”
Continued Discourse
The media company MeidasTouch took to social media to share an image comparing quotes from Trump and Hitler. They warned their followers: “We must not sit idly by as fascism rears its ugly head in America.”
A Calculated Deliberation
Among the comparisons given in the image was Trump’s declaration that migrants “are poisoning the blood of our country.” The quote was directly compared to Hitler’s belief: “Jews and migrants are poisoning Aryan blood.”
Trump Knows What He’s Doing
One user responded to the image: “Donald Trump knows that his supporters have an increasingly sick admiration for fascism and authoritarianism.” They voiced their concerns over a similar fate happening again: “And they said it couldn’t happen here. But it did. And it might be happening again.”
Conflicting Opinions
Others disagree with Scaraborough’s comparison. One person claimed that “Hitler and Trump are not the same.” Listing several reasons, they asserted that whilst Trump “also has deep internal ethnic identity issues,” that is the end of the comparison and “the end of their similarities on a fundamental level.” In their understanding, “Hitler is created, Trump is studied.”
A Different Comparison To Be Made
Whilst disagreeing with the direct comparison, one user instead agreed with the sentiment. They compared Trump to Kaiser Wilhelm II, the former German Emperor: “Trump is actually more like Kaiser Wilhelm II. He was a guy who thought he knew it all, fired all the folks who actually did know it all better than him, and screwed it all up and helped start WWI which eventually led to Hitler.”
Not the Whole Truth, but Almost
Responding to the claim that no comparison exists, one user wrote: “No one is saying Trump is the same as Hitler, so it’s not an unpopular opinion. Trump wants to be a fascist dictator. And like Nazism, the conservatives aren’t pushing back. They are falling into line.” They did, however, see a comparison between supporters: “Trump’s followers are just as hateful as Hitler’s followers.”
