George Santos (R-NY) has admitted that he expects to be expelled from the House in the latest development in the controversy surrounding the Representative. He has, however, refused to resign, stating that doing so would be a confession of guilt.
George Santos’ Controversy
Santos has been accused of fraud following a House Ethics Committee report that found evidence he misused political campaign funds. He was previously indicted in May and survived an expulsion vote on November 1 before the report findings were released.
Demanding Resignation
Santos has maintained his innocence, even as Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) demanded he resign over X Spaces. His colleague asked: “Why not do the right thing and resign?” adding, “I think you should be expelled.” Lawmakers will soon return to the Capitol following a break for Thanksgiving.
Santos’ Retaliation
In response to Garcia, Santos replied: “I haven’t been found guilty of anything. If I resign I admit to everything in that report.” He later elaborated, “I owned up right away. It was right away. I apologized. I wish most people would do that.”
Digs at Colleagues
Santos then concluded: “Some of our colleagues do all kinds of shady s—. They deny and deny it and then they resign.” Despite his refusal to resign, Santos has claimed that he will not run for reelection to the House in the 2024 elections.
The Federal Indictment
Garcia pointed out that Santos had a long road ahead and regardless of what happens in Congress, still has federal criminal charges to deal with. “George is going to have to face 23 different counts, indictments. He is going to have to face judges and juries.”
Congress vs Court
He continued: “In the U.S. Congress — we have a different standard; our standard is based on going off on the facts we know. He suggested that Santos should “make amends” for what the report describes as seeking to “fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy for his own personal financial profit.”
Expecting Removal
The DOJ indictment against Santos alleges that he conducted “a fraudulent scheme to steal the personal identity and financial information of contributors to his campaign.” Regarding his congressional career, Santos has said: “I fully expect to be expelled when Congress sends the Ethics Committee resolution.”
Maintaining Innocence
Santos has maintained that he is not guilty, even claiming that he will be remembered by history as the first legislator to be ousted from Congress without it ever being proven that he “committed wrongdoing.”
The Internet Reacts
People online continued to react to the unfolding Santos situation, particularly his confession that he expects to be removed from his position. “Probably the only truthful statement he’s ever made,” one forum user wrote, alluding to the Rep’s history of lying.
A Potential Lifeline
Someone else was unconvinced that Santos would finally face consequences for his actions and predicted that he would survive his expulsion vote. “The GOP majority in the House is too small and they are too cowardly, they won’t expel him,” they said. House Republicans losing Santos would diminish the party’s already tiny majority in the House.
The Risk for Republicans
“The GOP won’t since it could cost them a seat,” another person concurred, leading another member to disagree: “I think, at this point, they believe that ditching him gives them a better chance there in 2024. He’s a lingering embarrassment to them now.”
No Chance at Reelection
Someone countered, “How does that separate him from the rest of the usual subjects? MTG? Bobo? Gaetz?” prompting another user to clarify: “The rest of those clowns might win reelection while he’s almost certainly a lost cause.” Someone else observed that “George is in a swing district” and therefore it is key to Republicans that they put forward a candidate who can beat a Democrat.
A Household Name
Others felt that regardless of the vote outcome, Santos had won anyway. One poster declared: “We all know his name now. That was his win, not being a congressman,” suggesting that Santos was more concerned with cultivating his profile.
An Overdue Expulsion
Some people believed that Santos should’ve long since been expelled. “Since Trump, the bar has continued to be lowered and I fear we haven’t reached the bottom yet. An honest Republican Party would have removed Santos immediately but those days are long gone.”
A Failed Grifter
One particularly scathing review of Santos said: “He knows he will be expelled because he isn’t stupid and understands that he failed to get away with his grift. If he had balls he’d take the congressional “grifters” and “hypocrites” down with him. But people like him have nothing. No courage, no vision, no ability to actually make a difference.”
Calling for Resignation
Many Santos critics called for him to resign and save Congress time on the expulsion vote. “If he doesn’t want to be expelled, he can resign,” someone proposed. “You can avoid being expelled by just quitting,” another observed.
Legal Consequences
Other users expressed their hopes that Santos would not only be removed from the House but would receive legal consequences for his behavior. “It’s the best possible thing that could happen to him, other than jail time.”
Zero Sympathy
Overall, people were highly critical of Santos and had no sympathy for the mess he’d gotten himself into. “Here’s my tiny violin,” one person stated, while another exclaimed “Bye Felicia.”
