Outspoken right-wing congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene is no longer a House “power broker” and doesn’t seem to know what to do to regain her status as a leading Republican figure, according to at least one political analyst.
Former Speaker a Greene Ally
Greene’s apparent fall from grace came with the swift removal of key ally House speaker Kevin McCarthy, in a cross-party vote on October 3, says writer Hayes Brown.
Historic Removal
It was the first time in US history that House members voted to get rid of a speaker, and it came following dissent over issues such as tax cuts and aid to Ukraine as it battles Russia.
‘Pick of Jobs’
With McCarthy as the House leader, Greene, a Georgia representative, was able to choose which committee assignments she wanted and also was able to influence the Republican Party’s agenda in the House, Brown wrote in an analysis piece for MSNBC.
Greene ‘Flailing About’
Saying that Greene’s “time as a power broker was as short-lived as McCarthy’s reign” — the speaker was in the post just shy of nine months — Brown said the congresswoman “has been on a bit of a tear, flailing about and lashing out at other Republicans as she tries to regain her standing as an avatar of the MAGA movement.”
Greene Is ‘Isolated’
The political writer said that Greene, 49, “is more isolated than ever — and an attempt to win back her former status seems unlikely.”
MJT Book
Greene is currently making waves with a new book she has out about her time so far in politics, called after her initials, MJT.
Controversial Claim
In her book, Greene suggests that her Democratic colleagues were too cowardly to stay and defend the House chamber as rioters were approaching and trying to gain entry during the January 6, 2021, attack.
Democrats ‘Fled’
She writes: “Several of the Republican congressmen said, ‘We’re going to stay right here and defend the House chamber.’ As they began barricading the door with furniture, I noticed not one Democrat was willing to stay to defend the chamber.”
‘A Big Lie’
But Greene has been called out on her claim, with one Democrat who was on the floor at the time, Jason Crow of Colorado, branding it a big fib.
‘Patently False’
Crow told the Guardian newspaper: “Marjorie Taylor Greene doesn’t exist in the same reality as the rest of us. For those of us who were there on January 6 and actually defended the chamber from violent insurrectionists, her view is patently false. She doesn’t know what she’s talking about.”
January 6 Riots
Former president Trump called on his supporters to protest at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, over the 2020 election that he lost to Joe Biden. Trump claimed the election was “rigged” and “stolen” — false assertions but ones that Greene also believes. Thousands of MAGA — Trump’s Make America Great Again slogan and movement — turned up and rioting broke out in which five people were killed.
Trump Book Promo
Trump has used his Truth Social platform to promote Greene’s book, saying she “has been one of the most fierce warriors in Congress for America First, and all it stands for. Despite the onslaught of attacks from the Marxist Democrats, and the Fake News Media, Marjorie refuses to back down and never stops fighting. I know you will LOVE her new book, MTG — get your copy today!”
Online Reaction
Not everyone was so impressed with Trump’s endorsement of the book. One wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “Translation of Trump’s post: ‘Marge says nice things about me so I will help her take people’s money.’”
‘Doesn’t Work for Americans’
Another X user said: “She never stops fighting, but what? She doesn’t work for the American people. All she does is draft baseless articles of impeachment and post on social media to monetize.”
Trump and Possible Jail Time
Someone else said on X, referring to Trump’s many legal problems: “Too bad she’s not going to jail with him.”
Trump’s Troubles
The former president, 77, has been hit with four indictments, including two that allege he tried to overturn the result of the 2020 election and harm democracy. Another claims he illegally removed classified documents from the White House and kept them at his Florida home, and a fourth alleges he paid hush money to cover up an alleged affair. Trump, the GOP 2024 nominee frontrunner, denies the charges, saying they are attacks by Democrats.
