Republican firebrand Marjorie Taylor Greene’s efforts to criticize FBI Director Chris Wray as weak on domestic terrorism have backfired — because she got his government agency wrong.
House Hearing Video
Greene, a Georgia House representative, shared with her 2.8 million followers on X (formerly Twitter) a video of her grilling Director Wray in a House hearing.
‘Clueless about Jihadists’
She wrote in a post accompanying the video, referencing the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol: “FBI Director Chris Wray claims to prioritize terrorism but doesn’t even know about the jihadists who occupied our Capitol!”
‘Can’t Trust the FBI’
Greene added, referring to Donald Trump’s campaign slogan and movement Make America Great Again: “Wray’s FBI targets innocent conservatives and MAGA grandmas who peacefully walked through the Capitol on [January 6] instead of real threats. We cannot trust them to keep us safe.”
A ‘Weaponized’ FBI
And Greene blasted at the hearing: “On Wray’s watch, the FBI has been fully weaponized against Biden’s political enemies.”
January 6 Attack
Thousands of MAGA supporters gathered at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, after then-president Donald Trump urged them to protest the result of the 2020 election he lost to Joe Biden — falsely claiming the vote had been “rigged” and “stolen” from him. Violence between the supporters and police and security officials broke out and five people were killed.
FBI Vs Dept of Homeland Security
In a terse exchange with the FBI director that she shared in her X post, Greene said Wray’s “Department of Homeland Security, organized with other offices, has censored many Americans, including myself.”
Not in DHS
Wray corrected Greene, saying: “I’m not part of the Department of Homeland Security” — and many people who saw the X post suggested the congresswoman was not so intelligent.
Greene ‘a Fool’
One person wrote on X: “You didn’t know he’s not a part of the DHS?!? I love when you embarrass yourself without even trying. Maybe if you spent less time on X and doing your job you would know that. What a fool!”
Any Difference?
Another X user offered: “Did you really think he was head of DHS today? Or did you not think there was a difference between FBI and DHS?”
Checking Facts
Still another X user said of Greene’s blunder: “It would appear that Marjorie Taylor Greene is making a fool of herself again. Not that that’s extraordinary, but rather an annoying waste of taxpayer’s money just to prove she gets owned by every witness in every hearing.”
MTG Book
Greene is currently promoting a new book she has written, called after her initials, MTG. One of its most controversial claims, according to advance copies obtained by the media, is that Democrats did not defend the House chamber as rioters attacked it — only Republicans.
‘No Democrats in Chamber’
Green writes that as the attackers approached: “Several of the Republican congressmen said, ‘We’re going to stay right here and defend the House chamber.’ As they began barricading the door with furniture, I noticed not one Democrat was willing to stay to defend the chamber.”
Account Debunked
But Greene’s account of what happened on the House floor on January 6 has been criticized as incorrect. Democratic congressman Jason Crow was in the House chamber at the time and told the Guardian newspaper she was not telling the truth, only seeking to attack rival Democrats.
‘Patently False’
Crow said: “Marjorie Taylor Greene doesn’t exist in the same reality as the rest of us. For those of us who were there on January 6 and actually defended the chamber from violent insurrectionists, her view is patently false. She doesn’t know what she’s talking about.”
Greene Media Tour
On a tour of the media to promote her new book, Greene has also upheld Donald Trump’s view that the 2020 election was rigged and that Trump was the rightful winner. The former president has been indicted for attempting to overturn the election result and block the peaceful transfer of power — one of four indictments carrying 91 criminal charges he is battling as he seeks to return to the White House.
Trump Leading the GOP Pack
Despite his many legal troubles, which also include a civil trial in New York that threatens to remove his control of the Trump Organization and slap him with a $250 million fine, Trump is leading the Republican field for the party’s 2024 nomination. He is currently polling around 50 points ahead of all GOP rivals, including onetime close challenger Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
