“Anyone Who Equates Pot to Meth Is Really Stupid”: Wedding Guest Infuriates Christian Couple by Bringing THC Gummies to Reception

In a surprising turn of events at what was meant to be a joyous celebration, a wedding became the backdrop for a heated debate over THC gummies. The incident unfolded at a small reception, attended by about 60 people, where a plus-one guest’s choice of party favors triggered a clash of perspectives. Now, the individual in question has taken to social media to find out if he’s in the wrong.

THC Gummies at a Wedding Reception

The guest, a 26-year-old man, was invited to the wedding as a plus-one by one of the bridesmaids – his roommate. The couple getting married had met the man a few times before and they seemingly got along. Anticipating a pleasant evening, he brought along a pack of 5 mg THC gummies, which he intended to consume discreetly during the course of the reception. His roommate was aware of the plan.

He Offered the Gummies to the Guests Beside Him

The ceremony proceeded without a hitch and transitioned smoothly to the reception. The guest found himself seated at a table with bridesmaids and two friends of the bride from her college years, a couple in their 20s. As the newlyweds and their entourage departed for photographs, appetizers were served, prompting the guest to consume one of his gummies. In a friendly gesture in line with stoner culture, he offered some to the couple seated with him, only to receive polite refusals.

People Made Him Uncomfortable

As the evening progressed, the atmosphere shifted. The couple he’d offered the gummies to started to engage in hushed discussions with a bridesmaid seated across the table. While the details of their conversation remained inaudible due to the music, the tone of the interactions underwent a transformation. Their responses took on a snarky edge, with comments alluding to the gummies and implications that the guest was indulging in more than just candy. Feeling uncomfortable, the man decided to excuse himself and retreated to the patio.

The Concerns of Christians

Following his departure, the guest’s roommate joined him outside and said that the table had discussed the situation in his absence, prompting a wave of disapproval from the couple and even some of the other bridesmaids. The couple had reportedly expressed dismay and claimed their concerns were rooted in their Christian beliefs.

The Guest Apologized

The guest returned to the table and attempted to address the situation. “We returned [and] I apologized and tried to explain that the gummies are legal [and] not addictive like alcohol or other drugs. The man seemed to think that was a jab at him, as he was already pretty drunk. He interrupted me [and] said, ‘You don’t get to tell others how much they can drink at a wedding, especially when you’re a plus-one [and] we were actually invited,” the guest wrote in his social media post. Tempers flared and the dialogue reached an impasse, eventually dissipating as dinner was served. However, the incident didn’t die down entirely and overheard snippets of conversation in the buffet line confirmed that the topic was still a subject of discussion among attendees.

The Discomfort Was Too Much

Eventually, the guest decided to leave the festivities and sit in the car. After a three-hour wait, his roommate emerged and told him the bride’s perspective on the matter. Reportedly, she wasn’t personally perturbed by the guest’s actions. Nonetheless, she’d expressed that bringing edibles to the wedding, where many attendees held conservative religious beliefs, was a misstep. The bride had also implied that some guests equated cannabis with harder, illicit substances –  like methamphetamine or cocaine.

The Internet Responded

The guest’s story took social media by storm and the post now has over 2,000 comments. “I’m gonna say [everyone sucks here]. They need to chill out, especially if you aren’t making a scene, but you shouldn’t offer random people you don’t know THC at a wedding,” one person wrote.

Ignorance Around Cannabis

Others called out ignorance among the wedding’s guests. One individual said: “[The man] didn’t do anything wrong. It’s legal in that jurisdiction and [he was] being polite in offering it to others of legal age. Personally, I also would have declined but wouldn’t have been offended or thought anything bad about [the man]. Anyone [who] equates pot to meth is just really ignorant.”

A Very Inappropriate Action

Others said the guest’s actions were entirely inappropriate. One person wrote: “Unless the couple getting married openly encourages it at the wedding itself, you don’t bring drugs to a wedding. Offering to share only increased the level of inappropriateness. Doing it when you’re a plus one and have hardly met the couple is especially poor taste because you don’t even know the couple well enough to know whether they’d be comfortable around edibles at all, much less comfortable having them at their wedding.”

Read the Room

People told the guest that he failed to read the room. “In a situation like a wedding, you gotta read the room. Popping the gummy is fine, definitely makes the reception better but – for the love of God – don’t offer one to some rando. People have misguided opinions on weed,” one person said.

THC vs. Alcohol

Some commenters pointed out the hypocrisy of people having an issue with cannabis but not alcohol. “If people can openly consume and share alcohol, then you can openly consume and share THC products where it’s legal. You did nothing wrong,” one person wrote.

Hypocrisy Among Christians

Others shared a similar view to the aforementioned commenter. One individual said: “Like most Christians, their own ideology is so backward it doesn’t even make sense. God made weed. Man-made alcohol. If any Christian ever has an issue with weed use, just repeat this mantra. Why would they deem something man-made acceptable over something He made? Watch them sputter and spin out.”
