She worked with two older ladies who were also secretaries. One of them was okay, but she spent most of her time sitting next to the other woman.
Approaching Retirement Age
The woman she sat next to was quickly approaching retirement age, but wasn’t going anywhere without a big push. She explained, “This was in the days when we just started getting computers and she was absolutely hopeless.”
Can’t Do, Won’t Do
Her colleague made excuses such as, “I can’t answer the phone because I’m on the computer.” Multi-tasking was not in her skill set.
Fussy and Annoying

Typo Announcements
The colleague would make a big announcement to publicly shame her whenever she made a typo in a document. It began to get tedious.
Always Late
Despite the public shaming, her colleague was always arriving late and leaving earlier for appointments she never provided proof of. Yet, she hated being called out about it.
Pouting and Quitting
She tended to pout when things didn’t go her way, and she would threaten to quit her job when someone annoyed her. Then the owner would talk her into staying.
Knew Her Tactics
She told readers, “I’d heard about this tactic of hers and one day, our boss did something that annoyed her, so she ‘quit’ again. My boss’s boss was away that day, so I had my chance.”
Planned a Retirement Party
She quickly advertised and planned a big retirement party and ordered a cake for her colleague. It was a done deal by the end of the day.

She finished by saying, “I told my boss to not bother replacing her. It was easy enough to cover the little work she actually accomplished every day.”
