A Cincinnati University professor gave one of her students a grand total of zero points for delivering an essay on feminism that was “solid” but used the outlawed term “biological women” — sparking outrage among fellow students and people who say the gender wars have gone too far.
No Marks at All
Student Olivia Krolczyk, 20, was left reeling when she found out her project was marked nothing out of a total of 20 possible points, despite Professor Melanie Nipper, 28, saying she had done a good job. Instead, she failed.
‘Not Inclusive’
In comments accompanying the project’s score, Professor Nipper said her student should have been more inclusive when discussing women, alluding to transgender people who were born one gender but change to another.
Banned Term
The professor wrote on the project’s results: “Olivia, this is a solid proposal. However, the terms “biological women” are exclusionary and are not allowed in this course as they further reinforce heteronormativity. Please reassess your topic and edit it to focus on women’s rights (not just “females”) and I’ll re-grade.”
Transatheltes Paper
Krolczyk lashed out at the adjunct professor in the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies by making a video on TikTok that went viral. She explained that she had written an essay on trans athletes in women’s sports — a highly controversial topic — and said that transwomen, or biological men who become women, were harming the chances of “biological women.”
Lodging a Complaint
The baffled student also made a complaint to Cincinnati’s Office of Gender Equity and Inclusion, saying that the professor had trampled on Krolczyk’s right to free speech. The university suspended the professor but later reinstated her.
No Real Free Debate
Speaking to the Cincinnati Enquirer newspaper, Professor Nipper said she allowed free debate in her classroom but not if “you are, intentionally or unintentionally, participating in a systemic harm of some kind.”
Rewrite Necessary
Professor Nipper said that while she had failed the student on the paper, it was just one assignment and she had not failed her on the entire course. And while she said she would “happily regrade” the paper, Krolczyk would have to write it again — and leave out the term “biological women.”
‘Marginalized People’
Professor Nipper said the current paper was not good enough. “This is unacceptable based on the community, the marginalized individuals that are at stake, and also the foundations of the course,” she said.
‘Woke Mob Professor’
Critics blasted Professor Nipper for her stance on the term “biological women” as fallout from her zero-grade result continued. One website, OutKick,” ran an article branding her a “woke mob professor,” while another blasted: “It’s the latest example of leftist politics in the nation’s schools.”
Nipper ‘the Victim’
Writing on X (formerly Twitter), Krolczyk ripped into Professor Nipper for suggesting she was the victim, as she had until then not mentioned her name in her social media posts.
“After making the decision to fail me for using the term ‘biological women’ while writing about the very true fact that men are taking opportunities away from women in athletics, she has attempted to make herself look like the victim in the situation,” she said.
‘Trying to Protect the Professor’
The student continued: “Nipper decided to reveal her own name and is now complaining about hate she is receiving. Which is exactly what I intended to protect her from since the very beginning.”
Krolczyk ‘Not Transphobic’
Krolczyk wrote: “It is not transphobic to acknowledge the reality that a man will never be a woman. It is not transphobic to say that men do not belong in women’s sports. It is not harmful in any way to say ‘biological woman.’”
‘Extreme Views’
And she blasted the professor for her views. “This situation showcases the very real threat that professors with extreme ideologies can pose to students. This situation also showcases the unfortunate reality and direction that society is heading towards,” said Krolczyk.
Online Reaction
Reacting to the controversy on X, Chris Coulter, a self-described “political pundit,” said it was impossible to change basic biology. “If you have XX chromosomes, you are female. If you have XY chromosomes, you are male. Any other combination of chromosomes is an extremely rare genetic defect. No amount of surgery or hormone treatments will change that.”
Professor ‘Failed’
Another X user, Mary Liggio Ross, suggested it was the professor, not her student, who had failed. “I guess we shouldn’t be surprised!” she wrote. “[Professor Nipper] doesn’t have a leg to stand on- her actions go against everything that is right and fair and must be part of any educational value and integrity. She’s the one that FAILED, not you Olivia!”
Flood of Support for Student
Amid a flood of comments mostly in support of Krolczyk, another person said: “It is not transphobic to state reality. It is misogyny that allows men into our spaces, sports, & prisons.” Someone else declared: “Nipper is Heterophobic.”
