During an appearance on Fox News, House Republican Anna Paulina Luna stated that a vote for impeaching President Biden will occur “at the beginning of next year”.

Speaker McCarthy Alleges Biden Oversaw “A Culture of Corruption”

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy indicated in September that Republicans will begin an investigation into Biden’s impeachment, which may lead to a full-scale impeachment trial. McCarthy charged that Biden had presided over “a culture of corruption,” focusing his criticism on Joe Biden’s business dealings with his son Hunter Biden. The president has said he “never talked business” with any of his son’s contacts and has denied any impropriety.

Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana, who pledged to pursue the impeachment process after Biden’s conduct “looks and smells a lot like” bribery, succeeded McCarthy, who became the first Speaker of the House in American history, following three weeks of Republican unrest.

After winning a seat in the House in November 2022 to represent Florida’s 13th district, Fox News anchor Jesse Watters questioned Luna on Wednesday over the impeachment procedure.

She stated: “I do believe that in my time in Congress, for the 118th Congress, I will be taking a vote on impeachment and that’s going to be against Joe Biden.”

Watters inquired, “When do you think the time frame for that’s going to be?,” and Luna said, “Well, I think Speaker Johnson is exactly equipped to lay that out but I’m thinking it’s probably going to be at the beginning of next year.”

Impeachment Inquiry Already off to a Poor Start

Republicans’ efforts to impeach Biden began badly when their witness, legal scholar Professor Jonathan Turley of George Washington University, stated during the first hearing that he did not think the level of proof needed to do so had been fulfilled.

He continued: “I have previously stated that, while I believe that an impeachment inquiry is warranted, I do not believe that the evidence currently meets the standard of a high crime and misdemeanor needed for an article of impeachment.”

Even still, Republican Oversight Committee Chair James Comer maintained that they had “mountains of evidence” against Biden. “We know not only there were crimes, we know there are cover-ups. We have mountains of evidence and now we’re ready to bring ’em in.”

Comer Complains “We’re in the Downhill Phase of This Investigation Now”

“We’re in the downhill phase of this investigation now because we have so many documents and we can bring these people in for depositions or committee hearings, whichever they choose, and we can ask these questions with evidence.”

Republicans Likely to Achieve Conviction

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court will preside over an impeachment trial in the Senate if the House votes by a simple majority to enact articles of impeachment against the president. A two-thirds majority in the Senate is necessary for conviction, and because Republicans make up the minority in that body, they have a great chance of obtaining that number.

During his administration, Donald Trump faced impeachment twice: once in 2019 due to allegations of power abuse and obstruction of Congress, and again in 2021 due to encouragement to revolt. Trump was exonerated in both instances because the two-thirds Senate majority needed for a conviction was not reached.

Impeachment’s Significant Role in Upcoming Campaign

Since Biden is the clear favorite to win the Democratic presidential nomination in 2024, the impeachment process may have a big impact on the following presidential campaign and divert attention from Trump’s criminal accusations.

The former president is facing multiple charges stemming from allegations that he coordinated the transfer of hush money to an adult film actress, improperly managed classified documents, and breached the law by trying to reverse the outcome of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia and throughout the United States. He has said that the cases against him are politically motivated and entered a not-guilty plea to all of the charges.
