Following the vote, McCarthy became the first House speaker in American history to be ousted by a motion to vacate.  He has been replaced with Representative Patrick McHenry of North Carolina in an interim position he will hold until a new speaker has been elected.

McCarthy Not Running Again

McCarthy also confirmed that he would not be running again, increasing speculation as to who could replace him in the role.  In January, McCarthy required 15 rounds of voting to get elected. This was due to the fact that many MAGA Republicans, including Gaetz, refused to get behind him.

Speaking on his show on Tuesday night, Fox News host Sean Hannity said Trump was winning support to become the next speaker.  “Kevin McCarthy will not seek the speakership again. Now sources are telling me at this hour that some House Republicans have been in contact with and have started an effort to draft former President Donald Trump to be the next speaker,” Hannity said in a clip that has since gone viral with over 3.2 million views.

Hannity continued: “I have been told that President Trump might be open to helping the Republican party, at least in the short term, if necessary, if it is needed.”

Trump has yet to make mention of this support or the ousting of McCarthy on his Truth Social page, however.  In relation to the ongoing tension within the Republican Party, Trump simply wrote in a post: “Why is it that Republicans are always fighting among themselves, why aren’t they fighting the Radical Left Democrats who are destroying our Country?”

Trump is currently facing a $250 million civil fraud trial in New York. This is due to a lawsuit brought forward by the New York Attorney General Letitia James.  She has accused the former President, his two sons Eric and Donald Trump Jr. and the Trump organization of filing fraudulent financial statements that inflated the value of several properties and assets by billions of dollars for financial perks.

“Trump Has a Proven Record,” Says Troy Nehls

Representative Troy Nehls of Texas, who sided with the majority of Republicans in voting against McCarthy’s removal, announced he intends to nominate Trump for Speaker.  In a statement, Nehls said: “When the U.S. House of Representatives reconvenes, my first order of business will be to nominate Donald J. Trump for Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. “President Trump, the greatest President of my lifetime, has a proven record of putting America First and will make the House great again.

It is not yet clear when the election for House Speaker will begin.  This is due to the fact this is the first time that such a vote has been necessary not at the start of a new Congress term.  Both the Republican and Democrat party will need to state when they are ready to enter into the process of electing a new Speaker.  The Democrats are expected to put fourth House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who ran for Speaker in January.
