Key Democrats express concern as a Times/Siena poll shows President Biden trailing Donald Trump in five of six battleground states, with 17% of Nevada’s Democratic voters now leaning toward Trump. This comes a year before the 2024 election, marking a significant shift from Biden’s previous victories in all six states. So, why have they jumped on the Trump bandwagon?
Trump Leads in 5 Out of 6 Swing States
In a recent survey published by the New York Times and Siena College, Trump is currently leading in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, and Pennsylvania, while Biden holds a small advantage in Wisconsin. A hypothetical rematch now sees Trump leading by an average of 48% to 44% across these states.
Trump Is Leading in Nevada by 11 Points
The latest polls show Trump leading in Nevada by 11 points, with 17% of Democratic voters also saying they would vote for him. Trump is also ahead by 5 points in Arizona and 4 points in Pennsylvania. In Wisconsin, Biden leads by 3 points, while Trump is ahead by 6 points in Georgia and 5 points in Michigan.
It’s Too Late to Change Horses
David Axelrod, a former strategist for Obama, responded to the recent poll by posting on X, “It’s very late to change horses; a lot will happen in the next year that no one can predict & Biden’s team says his resolve to run is firm.”
It’s a Legitimate Concern
“He’s defied CW before, but this will send tremors of doubt thru the party–not “bed-wetting,” but legitimate concern,” Axelrod wrote.
The Age Arrow Only Points in One Direction
Obama’s former strategist then said Biden’s age was the biggest concern for voters, stating, “The greatest concern is that his biggest liability is the one thing he can’t change. Among all the unpredictables there is one thing that is sure: the age arrow only points in one direction.”
A Dangerous Demagogue
He then came out in support of the President in his final post, stating, “The @POTUS is justly proud of his accomplishments. Trump is a dangerous, unhinged demagogue whose brazen disdain for the rules, norms, laws and institutions or democracy should be disqualifying. But the stakes of miscalculation here are too dramatic to ignore.”
Ballot Box Stuffers
In a swift response to David Axelrod’s post, a MAGA supporter posted, “Don’t kid yourself – Dems are calculating what hour counting should be shut down across the board, how many ballot box stuffers they need to hire, how many trucks of ballots need to head from NY to PA, how many batches of ballots printed on regular paper need to be made, how many “burst pipes” are required, how many double, triple and quadruple counts of ballots are needed to secure a biden ‘win.’”
Penn, There’s No Need to Panic
Mark Penn, who held the role of pollster for President Clinton for six years and became one of his top advisers, reassured FOX News that there was no need to panic over Biden’s numbers in The New York Times poll.
Clinton’s Ratings Were Worse
“I worked with President Clinton, and his ratings when I started were worse than this. Nobody thought George [W.] Bush was going to get re-elected, and Barack Obama’s re-election was in question. These are not good numbers.”
Policy Shift Is Needed
Penn suggested that, rather than causing concern, the polls should inspire the Biden administration to make policy adjustments aimed at addressing the challenges of illegal migration, inflation and other issues more effectively.
A Conviction Would Lessen Trump’s Lead
Further discoveries from the poll indicated that if Trump was convicted, this may have the potential to sway the electoral college in Biden’s direction. Trump’s support in key swing states could decrease by approximately 6%.
Biden Losing Young and Minority Voters
A recent survey by CNN/SSRS of registered voters reveals that former President Donald Trump is ahead of President Biden, with Trump at 49% and Biden at 45%. This situation is troubling for the President, highlighting he is experiencing a decline in support from vital demographics like young and minority voters.
Some Black Voters Also Turned to Trump
In a significant shift, Black voters, a crucial demographic for President Biden, are now showing 22% support for Trump in swing states.
Biden Lost Hispanic Voters
The President’s support among voters under the age of 30 is just one percentage point ahead, and his lead among Hispanic voters has dwindled to single digits.
Democrats Have Shown Strength
Despite the poll results, Biden’s low ratings stand in contrast to a successful election night for Democrats. In Ohio, voters affirmed abortion rights in the state constitution, and Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear secured a second term in Kentucky.
Biden Still Resilient
Biden posted on X in response to the latest polls, stating, “Voters vote. Polls don’t. Now let’s go win next year.”
Nancy Pelosi on Ohio’s Victory
Nancy Pelosi, the Former House Speaker, also posted on Twitter in response to the victory in Ohio and echoed the President’s resilience, saying, “THANK YOU to the Grassroots VIPs — our Volunteers In Politics from SF to OH to VA — who helped Democrats deliver Democracy on Election Day 2023!”
When We Vote We Win
“Months of phone and text banks, door knocks, picket lines and coalition work helped make the difference. When we VOTE, we WIN! -NP,” she wrote, implying the polls don’t reflect the voters’ intentions.
