Donald Trump has a lot to deal with these days, with legal cases piling up and running for the presidency again – so perhaps it’s not surprising that he was booed for failing to get the city he was in right.
City Name Error
Trump was appearing at a rally on Sunday night when he greeted Republican voters by saying hello to a city in another state.
Crowd Not Impressed
“Hello to a place where we’ve done very well, Sioux Falls! Thank you very much,” he told the crowd, before a mass chorus of boos erupted.
Big Distance
Trump was in Sioux City, Iowa, not Sioux Falls, South Dakota – 57 miles away to the north of the country.
Oh Dear!
Local senator Bradley Zaun had a quick word in a puzzled Trump’s ear and told him which place he was in. The former president then realized his blunder and said, “Oh! Oh!”
On the Attack
Once Trump was composed and the crowd had stopped booing and settled down, he began his speech by attacking rivals for the GOP nomination for the 2024 presidential election.
“Bird Brain” Haley
Trump laid into former South Carolina Governor and presidential hopeful Nikki Haley, calling her “highly overrated” and a “bird brain.” Haley, 51 and also a former UN ambassador, is trailing far behind Trump in national polling but has risen in polling in Iowa.
Haley: Tied in Second
In a new NBC News-Des Moines Register-Mediacom poll among Republican voters in Iowa, Haley is tied in second place with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, both at 16 percent. Trump, however, has the lead among GOP candidates in the state, at 43 percent support.
Pence Withdrawal From Race
The Iowa poll was taken before former Vice President Mike Pence ended his campaign for the White House, as he failed to gain traction amid continuing fury from hardcore Republicans who brand him disloyal for failing to help Trump stay in office following the tumultuous events surrounding the 2020 presidential vote.
2020 Election Request and Indictment
Trump lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden but refused to accept defeat. He had asked Pence to try and overturn the result in the Senate, where the vice president was president, but his deputy refused and didn’t have the power to do so anyway. Trump has been indicted over the election, facing criminal charges of attempting to thwart democracy and prevent the transfer of presidential power.
“Chaos, Vendettas and Drama”
Speaking at an event in Las Vegas where Trump separately appeared and gave a speech, Haley ripped into her rival by saying that the United States could not “have four years of chaos, vendettas and drama” that she charged the former president would bring.
Capsizing America
Haley told attendees in Las Vegas that Trump was not the right man for the job because he would do more harm than good.
“America needs a captain who will steady the ship, not capsize it,” she said.
Favorite GOP Candidate
But Trump is the likely candidate that GOP voters will select in primaries being held in January. He has a seemingly unassailable lead over the Republican field – nearly 50 points ahead of rivals in national polling – despite relentless, negative news stories about his legal difficulties.
Trump Criminal Charges
Trump is fighting off four indictments that contain 91 criminal charges, including the alleged mishandling of secret government files that he allegedly shared with other people, potentially risking US national security. He has portrayed the legal challenges, political analysts say, as attacks by Democratic operatives trying to keep him out of the White House.
Political Lawsuits
Posting on his Truth Social network on Monday, Trump reiterated that the legal action was because of Democrats.
“These highly political (All started by Crooked Joe Biden!) Lawsuits and Indictments shouldn’t be allowed to start until AFTER THE ELECTION IS OVER! Our Founding Fathers are looking down at Biden with scorn!”
Moves to Remove Trump from Ballot
Courts in two states, Colorado and Minnesota, are this week hearing arguments from liberal groups who say Trump should be disqualified from running for president again based on the insurrection clause in the Constitution – because of what happened at the US Capitol in January 2021.
Unprecedented Assault on US Democracy
The Colorado lawsuit says: “By instigating this unprecedented assault on the American constitutional order, Trump violated his oath and disqualified himself under the 14th Amendment from holding public office, including the office of the president.”
