Former president Donald Trump’s last chief of staff has contradicted his ex-boss’ claims that the 2020 presidential election was rigged and that Trump was “dishonest” in public statements saying he won.
Discussions with Special Counsel
Mark Meadows had been speaking confidentially with Special Counsel Jack Smith, who has been investigating the 2020 election debacle, and also appeared before a grand jury deciding if Trump should be indicted for trying to overturn the ballot results and prevent the peaceful transfer of power, ABC News reported. He was indicted in Georgia in August.
‘We Didn’t Win’
Meadows told Smith of the 2020 election results: “Obviously we didn’t win,” and blasted his former boss for saying he won shortly after the polls closed, ABC News said, citing a source who disclosed the statement from Meadows.
Meadows ‘Granted Immunity’
The former chief of staff only spoke to investigators and appeared before the grand jury because he had been granted immunity by Smith, ABC News said.
Dozens ‘Took Plea Deals’
Several dozen Trump allies have reportedly accepted plea deals with prosecutors to testify against Trump in a trial that is expected to grip the nation and further polarize voters ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
‘A Great Chief of Staff’
During his time at the White House, Trump publicly described Meadows as “a great chief of staff — as good as it gets.” He also called him a “special friend.”
Meadows ‘Is Lying’
Reacting to the ABC News article, Trump said on his Truth Social network that Meadows was not telling the truth about the election.
“I don’t think Mark Meadows would lie about the Rigged and Stollen 2020 Presidential Election merely for getting IMMUNITY against Prosecution (PERSECUTION!) by Deranged Prosecutor, Jack Smith,” he said.
‘Weak and Cowardly’
Trump continued with his commentary on the ABC News report, suggesting that his former chief of staff was a weak and cowardly man.
“BUT, when you really think about it, after being hounded like a dog for three years, told you’ll be going to jail for the rest of your life, your money and your family will be forever gone, and we’re not at all interested in exposing those that did the RIGGING… Some people would make that deal, but they are weaklings and cowards, and so bad for the future our Failing Nation. I don’t think that Mark Meadows is one of them, but who really knows?”
Online Reaction
People were quick to comment on Trump’s remarks about Meadows. A person called Sally, writing on X (formerly Twitter), said: “When faced with losing everything, I think you agree to anything. I have faith there is nothing to tell anyways and nothing will come of this.”
Call for ‘Compassion’
Another person on X said: “Compassion and empathy can go a long way in understanding one another. We should remember that people can face immense pressure, and we don’t always know the full story. When it comes to protecting loved ones, many of us would do whatever it takes.”
Out to ‘Get Trump’
An X account with the handle Bobsays offered: “It is all about the smear and public opinion based off of lawfare against attorneys. When you have public officials campaigning on slogans ‘Get Trump,’ you need to look no further. They twist and manipulate the system…”
A Controversial Election
Trump was seeking a second term in office in the 2020 election, held on November 3, but lost to Joe Biden. He refused to accept defeat, instead claiming the election had been “rigged” and was stolen from him. Courts have thrown out attempts by Trump’s campaign to have the outcome overturned, saying his claims were “baseless.”
A Deadly Protest
The following January, Trump used social media to call on his supporters to demonstrate against the election result at the US Capitol, where lawmakers were meeting to confirm Biden was the winner. Thousands of Trump followers massed on the Capitol and clashes broke out that left five people dead. The courts have been handing down stiff sentences to the dozens of people involved in the siege.
2024 Election a Rerun of 2020?
Both Trump and Biden are the leading candidates to be selected by their respective Republican and Democratic parties for the 2024 presidential election, according to polling that puts them far ahead of their rivals. If they get the nomination, it would mean a rematch of the 2020 election, and both men are around equal in the polls among voters who would choose them for president.
