When outspoken Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene shared an anti-transgender post on social media earlier this year, she sparked fury from people who branded her heartless. But it’s not the first time the right-wing politician from Georgia has stirred debate on controversial topics.
‘Trust the Science’
Greene, 49, and known by her initials MTG, posted an image on X (formerly Twitter) saying “There are TWO genders: Male & Female. Trust the Science!” — drawing condemnation from people online.
‘No Compassion’
Reacting to Greene’s post, a user on X called Lynda Upthegrove accused the House representative of lacking empathy with people.
“Hey Marge – you know that some people are born with both organs right? And so what do you say to THEM? And some are born with hardly any … where is your compassion??” She added: “Also — it’s a FREE country, so if someone wants to present themselves as the opposite to how they were born — they are FREE to.”
‘Overwhelming Our Country’
Another person on X, Richard Harmier, who describes himself as a “wide-awake conservative” and “Jesus lover,” agreed with the representative on her transgender stance.
“100% fact since the beginning of time,” he wrote. “Sick of this depravity that is overwhelming culture and country. If adults want to be perverted freaks they can deal with the consequences but leave the kids alone.”
‘Cavewoman’
Someone else on X poked fun at the debate with an image of what appeared to be an early human or neanderthal, covered in hair, with the words: “For the last time, I’m not Marjorie Taylor Greene!”
House Protest Sign
Before her transgender X post, Greene had caused fury in the House of Representatives by placing an anti-transgender sign on a wall outside her office — right across from a representative who has a transgender child.
Equality Act Block Attempt
Representative Marie Newman, Democrat of Illinois, whose term ended earlier this year, blasted Greene’s move, saying it was a protest against the Equality Act that the Georgia politician had attempted to block.
‘Immoral and Evil’ to Ban Trans Discrimination
Newman, who has a transgender daughter, said on X that Greene “believes prohibiting discrimination against trans Americans is ‘disgusting, immoral, and evil,’” and she responded to the anti-transgender sign by putting up a transgender flag outsider her office, “so [Greene] can look at it every time she opens her door.”
Equality Act Passed
The House passed the Equality Act in February, amending the 1964 Civil Rights Act and setting into law measures to protect people from being discriminated against on the basis of their sexual orientation, in the workplace, regarding housing and public services and in places like restaurants.
Covid Mask-Holocaust Flap
During the covid-19 pandemic, Greene drew furious criticism for comparing mask-wearing to the Holocaust, after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi decided that House members should keep wearing masks while on the chamber floor.
Pelosi ‘Abuse’
Speaking on a conservative podcast, Green said: “You know, we can look back at a time in history where people were told to wear a gold star, and they were definitely treated like second class citizens, so much so that they were put in trains and taken to gas chambers in Nazi Germany. And this is exactly the type of abuse that Nancy Pelosi is talking about.”
Apology Demanded
The American Jewish Congress was outraged by Greene’s remarks and demanded she retract her comments and apologize.
“You can never compare health-related restrictions with yellow stars gas chambers and other Nazi atrocities. Such comparisons demean the Holocaust and contaminate American political speech,” it said.
Mental Health, Not Gun Control
On America’s gun-violence epidemic, Green has said more attention needs to be paid to mental health and the medication that people are on than gun control.
‘Return to God’
Green said in a post on X: “Our nation needs to take a serious look at the state of mental health today. Sometimes meds can be the problem. America is failing our youngest generations from decades of rejecting good moral values and teachings.”
She added: “We don’t need more gun control. We need to return to God.”
Greene ‘Ill Informed’
A doctor, Scott Hadland, responded to Green’s post on mental health and gun control, saying: “I take a serious look at youth mental health every day as a pediatrician. You are ill-informed.”
He continued: “I and many of my colleagues would be happy to help you understand the problems & solutions. Strive for understanding, not bombast.”
