In recent reports, Faithful America has released its second-annual list of 10 American False Prophets. The list includes newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson and the former President himself, Trump. Faithful America had previously stated that they began the project as “members — Catholic, Protestant, and more — are sick of sitting by quietly while Jesus’s message of good news is hijacked by the religious right to serve a hateful political agenda.” So, who else made the list?
Inwardly Ravenous Wolves
On their website, which also includes a petition condemning the American false prophets, there is a headline quote from the Bible: “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.” Jesus in Matthew 7:15
Christian Nationalism a Threat to Democracy
Faithful America believes that “Christian nationalism poses a grave threat to democracy, the church, and the common good.” They also state that “grassroots Christians are sick of seeing false prophets distort the Gospel for their agenda of hatred, power, and division.”
Faithful America Identifies Leaders Posing a Threat
Faithful America launched its “False Prophets Don’t Speak for Me” campaign “to help Americans better identify, understand, and respond to the social and religious leaders behind this threat.”
Christian Nationalism Has One Goal
They also state on their website that there is one goal that the Christian nationalist movement has, which is “to gain political power and to impose its vision on all of society.” It also states that this movement will overturn elections, destroy people and institutions, and anything else that stands in its way.
Dangerous Rhetoric Attacking Equal Rights
The group also warns about the “tactics of political fascism” and “spread of misinformation.” They further state that Christian nationalists use “dangerous ‘us vs. them’ rhetoric and policies that attack equal rights for non-Christians, women, the LGBTQ community, people of color, immigrants, and other exploited populations.”
Johnson, an American False Prophet
Newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson has been called “the most unabashedly Christian nationalist speaker in history.” A recent article from The Associated Press reported that House Speaker Mike Johnson, before his election to public office, served as the dean of a non-existent small Baptist law school “that never opened its doors.”
Speaker Against Abortion and LGBTQ Rights
The newly elected House Speaker hails from the Southern Baptist tradition and strongly represents evangelical values and principles, boasting a substantial track record of advocacy against abortion and LGBTQ rights.
Defending Religious Freedom and Biblical Values
On the ‘False Prophets Don’t Speak for Me’ website, they quote Johnson and what he told the Louisiana Baptist Message in 2016, “I was called to legal ministry, and I’ve been out on the front lines of the ‘culture war’ defending religious freedom, the sanctity of human life, and biblical values, including the defense of traditional marriage, and other ideas like these.”
Johnson Tried to Keep Trump in Power After Election Loss
The House Speaker’s most prominent role in politics involved crafting an argument to maintain Trump’s grip on power despite his loss in the 2020 election. Additionally, Johnson has lent his support to legislation alongside Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, known as the Protect Children’s Innocence Act. This proposed law seeks to criminalize the provision of gender-affirming care to individuals under the age of 18.
Trump Weaponizes Christianity to Seize Power
The former President is also on the list of false prophets. The ‘False Prophets Don’t Speak for Me’ website states, “Trump weaponizes Christianity to seize power for himself, as he demonstrated when he teargassed peaceful protesters in order to use the Bible as a prop outside an unwilling church in Washington, D.C.”
Faithful America Targeting Flynn’s Reawakening Tour
They also state they are “speaking out against False Prophet Michael Flynn’s ‘ReAwaken America Tour’ wherever it goes,” Flynn made it onto last year’s list of American False Prophets.
Pastor Mark Burns Is Also a “False Prophet”
Pastor Mark Burns is another of Trump and Flynn’s close allies who made it onto this year’s list. Faithful America has called out Burns for his previous controversial speeches at Flynn’s ReAwaken Rallies, stating, “he regularly declares ‘war on Satan and every race-baiting Democrat’ and even uses the Bible to threaten explicit political violence.”
Christian Nationalism Often Overlaps With White Supremacy
An article published by Word&Way and authored by Nathan Empsall raised the issue that Christian Nationalism was “a theocratic political ideology” that “frequently overlaps with white supremacy.” The article also stated, “It falsely teaches that there is no separation of church and state – and urges conservative Christians to seize and hold power by any means necessary.”
Holy Wars and the Armor of God
Nathan Empsall also warned in his article that “This is the ideology that inspired the January 6 insurrection, organizes countless attacks on Americans’ equal rights, and could soon inspire a new wave of midterm political violence with rhetoric about ‘holy war’ and the ‘armor of God’ if the elections don’t go their way.”
Marjorie Taylor Greene, Boebert, Bannon & DeSantis
Last year’s list included politicians including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert, and Steve Bannon, Trump’s former aide.
Misusing and Appropriating Christianity
Rev. Kate Froehlich, Faithful America’s False Prophets project coordinator, said, “Whether they speak from the halls of power or the front of a sanctuary, each individual on this list has a track record of misusing and appropriating Christianity for their own political gain at the expense of everyone else.”
Reject Conniving Pseudo Christians
People reacted online to the new list of American False Prophets. One user posted, “Actual followers of Christ need to stand up and reject these conniving pseudo Christians. Good to see it’s happening.”
Johnson, “A Godless Heathen”
Another posted, “All MAGA Christians are Christian in name only. To them, all this is is a show they put on for their voters. Matthew 6:5-8 calls out this exact stunt as hypocrisy. I’m an atheist, and I know more about the Bible than Mike Johnson. This charlatan is more of a godless heathen than I am.”
