Donald Trump, the former Republican president seeking to become president once more, is at risk of losing the enterprise that made him famous and helped catapult him to the highest office in the land. So it’s not surprising that he and his lawyers have no time for the New York attorney general threatening to ruin him.
Has to Say It
Trump lawyer Alina Habba said of New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat who brought fraud charges against Trump, his adult sons and executives at the Trump Organization: “She’s just not that bright. I’m sorry, I have to say it.”
AG Has ‘No Case’
“I’ve seen their case. I’ve seen their lawyers. They don’t know what they’re talking about,” Habba said in an interview with Newsmax TV on Monday, as her boss was taking the stand in the fraud trial.
A Court Ruling
The judge overseeing the fraud trial in New York City, Arthur Engoron, has ruled that fraud was committed by the defendants, by exaggerating the value of their properties to get cheap loans. Executives from lenders such as Deutsche Bank have testified at the trial that the Trump properties were worth a lot less than Trump was claiming.
‘$2 Billion Overvaluation’
The court in Manhattan has found that in total, Trump properties were overvalued by around $2 billion so that executives at the Trump Organization could get financing from banks to expand their real estate empire.
Punishing Trump
As a result of his findings and ruling, Judge Engoron revoked some of Trump’s licenses to do business in New York State, and he appointed an outside monitor to oversee operations at the Trump Organization.
Children Testifying
Trump’s adult children have been testifying at the trial, so far with sons Donald Jr and Eric taking the stand. Daughter Ivanka is expected to soon testify, after the court rejected her claim that she was too busy with her children in Florida to fly to New York.
‘Judge Is Wrong’
In her interview with Newsmax, lawyer Habba said that Judge Engoron was wrong to rule that fraud occurred at the Trump Organization.
‘Not the Real Value’
Habba told the news outlet: “Just because a bank who’s giving you a loan says it’s worth what the loan amount is, which is what happens when anybody takes a loan out, they’re never going to say the real value. They’re going to say what they want to say and not a penny more, or what the loan amount is and not a penny more.”
Trial ‘Completely Insane’
Habba continued, slamming Attorney General James: “She needs to educate herself. Maybe go to some — I don’t even know how to express how ridiculous this is; it’s like being in a circus with a bunch of — I mean, what I want to say I can’t say on TV, but it’s crazy. You know, it’s just ridiculous. Anybody with a brain understands that this is just completely insane.”
Trump Testimony
Taking the stand on Monday, Trump repeatedly argued with Judge Engoron, and directly attacked him, saying: “I’m sure the judge will rule against me because he always rules against me, but this is well beyond the statute of limitations.”
Judge’s Order to Answer Question
Judge Engoron became increasingly frustrated at Trump’s evasive answers to prosecutors, and asked his legal team to “control your client.”
“This is not a political rally; this is a courtroom,” the judge said, adding: “I beseech you to control him. If you can’t, I will.”
Trump Gag Order Breaches
Following attacks by Trump on people involved in the case, to reporters and also on social media, Judge Engoron placed the former president under gag order. But Trump broke the order twice and was hit with penalties amounting to $15,000.
AG’s Big Fine Request
Attorney General James is seeking a fine of at least $250 million in the high-profile case and also wants to see Trump banned from doing business in New York State.
Other Legal Cases
Trump is also fighting four indictments, relating to the 2020 presidential election he lost to Joe Biden, alleged mishandling of government documents and an alleged payment of hush money. The charges carry dozens of years in prison if he’s found guilty. Trump rejects the charges and says they’re politically motivated.
GOP Frontrunner
As Trump battles his mountain of legal cases, he is also aiming to become the GOP nominee for the 2024 presidential election — and, as the runaway leader in the polls, has little to fight for.
