Ron DeSantis has hit back at the former president and insisted he would not serve as Donald Trump’s vice president.
Ron DeSantis on Vice President Possibility
Speaking in an interview on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures, the Florida governor addressed the ideas that he and Trump would serve together.
“No, I’m running for President,” DeSantis said as he dismissed the idea whether he would accept a potential offer from Trump to be his running mate.
Trump Can’t Win Specific States, says DeSantis
“We need somebody that can serve two terms,” DeSantis continued. “We need somebody that can win states like Georgia and Arizona, which President Trump cannot do or did not do. “This is even though candidates like McCain and Romney had no problem winning those states,” DeSantis as referring to the 2008 and 2012 Republican presidential nominees.
Trump On His Opponents Being His Running Mate
Earlier this year, in July, Trump indicated that he was considering each of his Republican rivals for the vice president role in the event he became the GOP’s nominee for the 2024 presidential election. “Let them debate so I can see who I MIGHT consider for Vice President!” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, on July 31.
Who Are Trump’s Opponents
Trump’s current Republican rivals are Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, former Vice President Mike Pence, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum and Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina.
Trump’s Reassessment Of His Opponents
Speaking at a non-union auto parts manufacturing company in Michigan, Trump gave a new assessment of each of his Republican rivals. Trump gave this speech at the company while the Republican nominee’s debate was ongoing. Trump had previously said he would not be attending. Trump indicated that while his position as the primary Republican candidate has not been solidified, he has already ruled out his current rivals for the position of vice president.
Trump Mocks His Rivals
“It’s all over television, this speech,” Trump said while speaking to his crowd. “You know, we’re competing with the job candidates? They’re all running for a job. No, they’re all job candidates.”
“I don’t think so,” Trump Comments on The Possibility of Rivals as Vice President
“They want to be in the… they’ll do anything. Secretary of something, they even say [Vice President],” he continued. “I don’t know, does anybody see any VP in the group? I don’t think so.”
Spokesperson Reiterates Trump’s Vice President Stance
Trump spokesperson Steven Cheun spoke to Newsweek after the former President’s speech and reiterated his point. When asked whether Trump’s remarks meant that those in the debate had been dropped from running-mater consideration, he said “President Trump was crystal clear.”
Trump Vs DeSantis
While both political figures have previously supported one another, Trump has repeatedly been critical of DeSantis over the past year. Ahead of DeSantis announcing he would be running the 2024 election, Trump has taken to mocking and criticising the Florida governor both in speeches and social media. Trump, who often comes up with nicknames for his opponents, took to dubbing the governor “Ron DeSanctimonious”
DeSantis Fighting Back
During the debate, DeSantis insisted Trump should be in attendance. He went on to say Trump is “missing in action”. DeSantis made these comments echoing former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie who took to calling the former president “Donald Duck” for refusing the public debate.
Trump Retaliates on Truth Social
Following the debate, Trump hit back at his critics with a scathing Truth Social post. When commenting on DeSantis, Trump indicates DeSantis’ presidential run could quickly be coming to an end. “Ron DeSanctimonious had a bad night. He can feel the end is near. Drop like a rock,” Trump wrote.
DeSantis’ Popularity
Although DeSantis was at one point considered one of the new favourite Republican faces that could run for President, according to recent polling his popularity has been falling among Republicans.
Losing to Trump
Recent survey from polling aggregate site FiveThirtyEight has shown DeSantis has been losing much ground against Trump. In the 2024 Republican presidential nomination Trump has an average of 54.7 percent of the votes while DeSantis has an average of 13.9 percent, putting him in a distanced second position.
DeSantis Challenged on Poor Polling
Fox News host Laura Ingraham referenced DeSantis’ poor polling during an interview last week. A recent CBS poll put Trump on 50 percent with likely GOP primary voters in the key early voting state of New Hampshire, versus 13 percent for DeSantis. For Iowa the poll put Trump on 51 percent followed by DeSantis on 21 percent.
How DeSantis Plans to Win
““I look at the border situation, I look at the budget situation, these are issues that Republicans have been talking about for decades and yet they still persist. I’m the only guy running that can say everything I promised my voters I would do I delivered,” DeSantis said in response. “[Delivered] on 100 percent of the promises, so yes I will beat Biden, but even more importantly than that I’m the guy that will actually deliver 100 percent of the results that we need to turn this country around.”
“They Came With Love in Their Hearts and It Was a Beautiful Day” Trump on January 6th Rioters Who He Promises To Pardon When Elected
Vanity Fair recently issued a report discussing how falsehoods that would typically ruin a politician’s chance of success seem to have the opposite effect on Trump and boost his voter base and popularity.
