A man shared how he and his boyfriend experienced poor service when they went out for drinks, and how he got revenge after being asked for a bigger tip.
A Cool Speakeasy
He said, “A couple of months back, my boyfriend and I went out for drinks one night at this cool little “speakeasy” in Montreal. It’s actually quite an interesting place.”
Nice Vibe
He described the place as having a nondescript entrance, but a really nice vibe going on once you get inside. He also explained this was a bar where the server comes to your table and serves the drinks, rather than one where you order at the bar and take the drinks back yourself.
Seated
They were seated at a table by the server. Then, they ordered a couple of cocktails. Followed by a couple more, then several more later on.
Fetched the Server
Each time they wanted to order, he or his boyfriend would have to fetch the server to take their order. Or they went to the bar, ordered, then brought the drinks back themselves.
Drinks Were Nice
He recalled that the drinks were nice. However, it was a shame about the service, and the prices were higher than in a regular bar.
Time for the Bill
When it was time for the bill, he went up again so the server would come to their table. He came and thought they were going to order again, despite the man clearly asking for the bill.
The Card Machine
The server went back to get the card machine and it was another ten minutes before he came back. The man said, “At that point, I was quite ticked off at the not-so-great service and was debating whether or not I should tip him at all.”
Tipping Options
The screen had an option for 10%, 15%, 20% or “other.” He decided to just leave 10% as he wanted to avoid an argument with the server.
Expecting Tips
He said, “Montreal service employees are pretty notorious when it comes to the expectation of tips. He printed out the receipt, took a look at it, and saw I left 10%.”
Tried To Be Polite
The server asked if they had a nice evening. The man’s boyfriend responded that they did, just to be polite. They both thought it was just a standard question servers ask, so didn’t bother telling him about the poor service received.
Asked For 15%
The server then said, “Well, if you had such a nice time, then you should’ve left at least a 15% tip. Because, in Canada, it’s customary to leave a minimum of 15% when the service is good.”
Assumed He Wasn’t Canadian
The man said, “I’m guessing the reason he felt the need to outline that’s how it is in Canada is because I’m a brown guy. So, he assumed I wasn’t a Canadian.”
Revenge
He responded with, “Oh, I didn’t know. Why don’t you cancel this bill and redo it so I can tip you properly?”
Ten Minutes Later
The server agreed, and ten minutes later, he came back with the new bill. “I put in the PIN and selected the ‘other’ option and left him 0%,” he said.
Disbelief
He printed out the receipt and looked at it in disbelief. His boyfriend said, “Our only tip for you is to give better service and not to be so much of a jerk. In Canada, we don’t like jerks.”
A Nice Evening Doesn’t Mean Good Service
One internet reader pointed out, “Just because you had a nice evening, that doesn’t mean the service was good. You should have told the waiter that you had a nice evening, but it would have been better if you had decent service.”
Not Worth the Time
Someone else said. “It’s not worth the time. If the service, the food, or something else was bad, I won’t want to come back anyway. I’d rather tell a white lie and just be done with it.”
Never Leave the Tip Blank
Several others said he did the right thing by writing 0.00 as a tip, rather than leaving it blank. They warned that a blank space can be filled in by the waiters if they decide to help themselves to a tip from your credit card.
$15 Tip
One woman backed this up by saying, “My mom noticed online that her bill was about $15 more than her receipt showed. It turned out her waitress wrote herself a nice $15 tip on my mom’s card.”
