Donald Trump has issued a threat to his political opponents, saying they had better look out, because if they attack him now, he will go after them if he becomes president again.
‘Weaponized the Legal System’
Trump was giving an interview to the Spanish-language Univision network when he told host Enrique Acevedo that the Democrats had “weaponized” the legal system to try and stop him from becoming president again.
Willing to Attack Foes
Asked by Acevedo if he too would weaponize the legal system if he’s elected president again, in the 2024 election, Trump said: “They’ve already done it, but if they want to follow through on this, yeah, it could certainly happen in reverse.”
‘Genie Out of Box’
The former president added ominously: “They’ve released the genie out of the box.”
‘Democratic Operatives’
Trump suggested that the indictments he has been hit with are the work of Democratic operatives who want to prevent him from running next year so their candidate can win.
‘Indictments to Win’
Trump said in his interview: “When you’re president and you’ve done a good job and you’re popular, you don’t go after them so you can win an election. They’ve done indictments in order to win an election. They call it weaponization.”
Indictments ‘to Eliminate Rivals’
Trump continued, saying “if I happen to be president and I see somebody who’s doing well and beating me very badly, I say go down and indict them, mostly they would be out of business. They’d be out. They’d be out of the election.”
Trump the GOP Frontrunner
Trump is leading the pack of GOP candidates seeking the GOP nomination for the 2024 presidential election, to be held on November 5. In an average of national polling, he is around 50 points ahead of rivals including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley.
Trump’s Many Legal Problems
But while Trump is the clear favorite to become the Republican Party candidate in the 2024 presidential election, he is fighting a mountain of legal cases. Along with an ongoing civil fraud trial in New York that threatens his real estate empire and carries the threat of a $250 million fine, the former president has been indicted four times.
Criminal Cases
Trump has been indicted in Georgia and at federal level for allegedly trying to overturn the result of the 2020 election, in which he was defeated by Joe Biden but refused to concede, maintaining the vote was “rigged” and “stolen.” He has also been indicted for alleged mishandling of top-secret government files that prosecutors say he removed from the White House and kept at his Mar-a-Lago resort home in Florida. A fourth indictment concerns the alleged payment of hush money to cover up an affair.
‘Dictator Trump’
Critics pounced on Trump’s remarks, saying they were the words of a dictator who was solely intent on punishing political enemies.
‘Doing Away with Elections’
Former first lady and ex-secretary of state Hillary Clinton warned that a second Trump administration would be authoritarian as she compared the former president to Hitler.
“When I was secretary of state, I used to talk about ‘one and done.’ What I meant by that is that people would get legitimately elected and then they would try to do away with elections, and do away with opposition, and do away with a free press,” she said on ABC’s The View.
Trump as ‘Hitler’
Clinton continued: “Hitler was duly elected. All of a sudden somebody with those tendencies, dictatorial, authoritarian tendencies, would be like ‘OK we’re gonna shut this down; we’re gonna throw these people in jail.’ And they didn’t usually telegraph that. Trump is telling us what he intends to do.”
Trump’s Words ‘Outrageous’
Former New Jersey governor and GOP nominee rival Chris Christie lashed against Trump for his remarks. Speaking on CNN, he said: “This is outrageous.”
Trump ‘a Danger’
Former congresswoman Liz Cheney has also warned of what another Trump presidency might bring. Branding Trump “the single most dangerous threat” to the United States, she predicted he would run amok should he get back into the Oval Office.
‘No Stopping Trump’
Cheney said on CNN that Trump “cannot be the next president because if he is, all of the things that he attempted to do but was stopped from doing by responsible people … he will do. There will be no guardrails. And everyone has been left warned.”
