A woman shared how she made her ex-husband regret lying in an attempt to have her sent to jail.
Getting Divorced
She explained, “I was getting divorced in the early 90s. My ex was angry that I was divorcing him.”
He Moved Out
Her ex-husband moved out, but later broke back in and destroyed several items such as her jewelry, and clothes. She knew he had done it, but couldn’t prove this.
Divorce Court
When they went to divorce court, he gave the judge a two-page list of things that he claimed to have brought to the house with him. He said that she refused to return these items.
Things He Never Owned
The woman’s attorney showed her the list. These were items that he never owned in the first place. She said that it was obvious he wanted her to be sent to jail for contempt of court.
Pay $2000
The alternative was to pay around $2000 for the missing items. She was determined not to do that.
Opted for Jail
She said she would choose jail, but her friends kept telling her to just pay it. She refused. Two days before she was due to appear in court, one of her friends asked to see the list.
Lack of Description
Her friend pointed out that he didn’t give much description. For example he listed a gun, but didn’t say what kind. He also said there was a computer and didn’t say the brand or any other details.
$200 To Buy
If she bought the cheapest version of everything on the list, it would probably cost her about 200 bucks. She agreed, knowing it would keep her out of jail, and also be worth him being livid that his plan didn’t work.”
Went Shopping Around
She said, “I went around to pawn shops and resale stores. I told whoever was in charge there that I was on a scavenger hunt, then briefly explained what was going on.”
Great Idea
They all loved the idea. This meant they were keen to help the woman get through her list quickly.
Some Bargains
She shared some examples of the bargains she found. “An old rusty cap gun screwdriver set, old clothing that didn’t look like it had been washed, a badly self-made bust/statue made from clay knives, and some rusty camping gear.”
Her Personal Favorite
She recalled one of her favorites. This was a monopoly game which was just the board, without any other pieces.
Boxing the Items
When she got the items home, she had to get a friend to videotape her boxing them all up and going through the items one by one. Her attorney told the judge that she had found the items in the attic and she just hadn’t seen them earlier.
Dropped the Box Off
The judge told her attorney to simply drop the box off at his office, then the divorce was final. Her only regret was not being able to see his face when he opened up that box of garbage. She knew there was nothing he could say, because he made the stuff up in the first place.
No Serial Numbers
She pointed out that her ex-husband never provided serial numbers for any of the items, and many wouldn’t have had them, such as clothes and camping gear. That was what gave her friend the idea.
Contempt of Court
Several readers argued that she wouldn’t go to jail for something like not returning the supposed missing items. However, she disagreed.
Not Just Angering the Judge
She said, “If a judge tells you to do something and signs an order for you to do it, and you fail to do it that is considered contempt of court. I think a lot of people are thinking of contempt of court as doing something to anger the judge in the court. That’s not the only way you can be found in contempt.”
Her Ex-Husbands Figure
She said, “The judge didn’t come up with the $2000 amount, my ex did. The house and contents had been mine before we got together.”
He Didn’t Want To Leave Empty-Handed
She finished by saying, “He wanted to get out of it with something, so he came up with this scheme. He thought I would have to come up with the money as he knew the items didn’t exist.”
