Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene’s new book, MTG, has ignited passionate discussions on social media. Greene offers her perspective in her account of the events surrounding the U.S. Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. She painted a very different picture from how many Democrats remember the day.
Greene’s New Release
The book is currently scheduled for a November 21 launch. Greene expressed her excitement about the text and her wish to communicate directly to critics and supporters through her book. She claimed, “In this book, I’m telling you exactly what my words are,” as opposed to the narratives about her.
Greene’s Take on Media Representation
Greene expresses her unhappiness with how the media has framed her. Clarifying her stand, she stated, “Since I’ve entered the scene in politics and in the House of Representatives, everyone has taken my words and twisted them and basically created a character of me.” Through MTG, she aims to fix these incorrect portrayals.
Personal Stories and Experiences
Congresswoman Greene offers insights into her congressional journey in her book. She touches upon her challenges, such as being ousted from congressional committees. Additionally, she discusses her advocacy, like her commitment to the Protect Children’s Innocence Act, and experiences on challenging days like January 6.
Political Polarization during the Capitol Riot
During the January 6 Capitol riot, Greene observed distinct reactions between GOP House members and their Democrats. In a sample of her book, Greene said, “From the moment we became aware of the riots, the difference between the parties became crystal clear.” She praises Republican members for their courage and readiness.
Republicans as “Good Guys with Guns”
In MTG, Greene emphasizes the armed presence of some Republican members. She asserted their Second Amendment rights and wrote, “As supporters of the Second Amendment of the Constitution, some members carried concealed weapons and were ready to be good guys with guns, defending themselves and others if need be.”
Other Weapons
However, Green also notes that these members did not only use firearms as weapons. Instead, she said some also used objects like hand sanitizer stands and broken furniture as potential weapons. According to Greene, this shows how determined these people were to safeguard the House.
Conversation with Louisiana Representative
In one section, Greene shares a conversation with Louisiana Representative Clay Higgins during the tense moments of the siege. Green said, “I’d never thought much about it before that, but we constantly deal with death threats.” Greene expresses deep trust in him, particularly highlighting his law enforcement background. She believes such individuals can “protect themselves – and others – responsibly with a gun.”
The Blame Game
Greene’s perspective on the culprits of the January 6 events is clear yet controversial. Being a newly sworn-in member then, she expressed, “I have a hard time accepting the fact that supporters of former President Donald Trump ransacked the Capitol.” Instead, she shifts the narrative, asserting that members of “Antifa” were the actual instigators of the violence.
Hunkering Down in the House Chamber
During the chaotic episode, legislators sought shelter within the chambers, uncertain of the outside events. Greene mentions, “We had no idea that Trump supporters got wrapped up in the Capitol breach, only that they were there peacefully protesting.” Many people criticized this statement, as they argued the majority of the protesters were there with violent intentions.
Controversy Over Past Comments
However, these are not the only controversial comments Green made. Her remarks at the New York Young Republican Club in December 2022 stirred major debate. She implied that, under her leadership, the January 6 riot would’ve been more armed and “would have won.” While she defended herself, saying her comment was a joke, many considered it a serious indication of her intentions and beliefs.
Biden’s Administration Responds
Andrew Bates, the White House Press Secretary, addressed Greene’s controversial remarks. He said, “It goes against our fundamental values as a country for a member of Congress to wish that the carnage of January 6th had been even worse and to boast that she would have succeeded in an armed insurrection against the United States government,”
MTG’s Publisher and Availability
Winning Team Books, which Donald Trump Jr. had a hand in co-founding, is releasing the book. This company prides itself on promoting “America First patriots.” Greene, during a press call, proudly shared that her book will be on the shelves of top retailers like Amazon and Barnes and Noble. She also said it would be featured at rallies for Trump’s upcoming 2024 campaign.
Whataboutism Highlighted
Some social media criticized Green’s discussion of the January 6th event. One user on social media said, “This is the ugly truth about whataboutism. You inadvertently admit to your own wrongdoings.” The comment refers to politicians avoiding direct answers by pointing out faults in others.
Green’s Lies
Some users highlighted Green’s comments about the event being a peaceful protest. One user asked, “So she agrees that an attempted insurrection took place on Jan 6th?” Other users claimed this statement couldn’t be true, sarcastically saying, “There weren’t enough gallows and firearms for her to think it was peaceful.”
Comparing Protests to Insurrections
Another user drew a distinction between protests and insurrections: “This demonstration or protest could turn into a riot, but if they aren’t trying to replace the people in power and the system of governance through military and paramilitary action, it’s not an insurrection. I don’t think the people demonstrating for Palestine have fake electors or someone they plan to install as the new leader of the US, do they?”
Questioning the Intelligence of Followers
Other users took aim at politicians and their followers. “I don’t know which is worse, how profoundly stupid GOP politicians believe their followers are or that they may be right.” Another user shared this idea, saying, “Life is easy being a Republican politician. You say whatever stupid stuff you want, and your voters just want to know if that will hurt the black people, in which case they’re all for it.”
Concerns for Democracy
Some comments were more concerned about the broader implications of January 6th. “Democrats, Republicans, independents. Jan 6th could be a stepping stone towards the destruction of Democracy in the USA. What a tragic and disturbing event.” For these users, the concern is for the very fabric of American society.
Lack of Creativity Among Conservatives
However, not all comments were centered on Greene or the Capitol siege. One pointed out a general trend by saying, “Conservatives have so little creativity and are constantly just throwing back what liberals throw at them.” Other users echoed these thoughts and agreed that this revealed more about the Republican Party’s ideas than anything.
