A quiet suburban neighborhood became the stage for a bitter feud, sparked by a neighbor’s actions. “I couldn’t believe how heartless they were,” said the dog owner.

Posting on an online forum, the dog owner talked about their upset over their pitbull’s cancer diagnosis. “A couple months ago our lovely older pitbull was fighting cancer. She was low on energy at this point. Mmoving was difficult, and getting her to eat was getting near impossible,” he said.

A Difficult Decision

It was a difficult decision, but the dog owner felt there was no other choice but to have the pitbull put to sleep.  “With that, one of the only things we wanted to give her was one last day outside in the backyard.”

One Last Day

The day before the dog was due to be put to sleep, the owner got up early and set up a tent in the backyard,. He filled and surrounded the tent with all of the dog’s favorite items. This would be one last good day for the beloved pet.

Neighbors Started Burning Leaves

The owners said, “I noticed as I was setting things up, the neighbor behind us was placing sticks and leaves in their fire pit. I wouldn’t usually care at all, but the poor dog is having trouble breathing at this point.” Talking to the neighbor might help.

A Polite Request

“I figured it wouldn’t be an imposition to let them know my current situation and asked if they could postpone the burning just for today.” The woman let him know they were just burning a few things, with the intention to clear their yard. She assured them, it wouldn’t take long.

The woman acknowledged the situation with the dog and her serious condition, but lit up the fire anyway. The smoke billowed into his backyard.

The Size of Their Neighbor’s Garden

He explains the size of both gardens and the position of the neighbor’s garden, for context. The neighbor is directly behind my property, I have about a 100 ft x 100 ft backyard and theirs is about 50ft length x 100ft wide.”

Normally, He Doesn’t Mind What the Neighbors Do

He  told the forum readers, he’s usually happy for the neighbors to do what they want in their own space. “Just to add this, I don’t mind if people are burning things around me, I am not particularly fond of it, but if it makes them happy that makes me happy.”

A Few Hours Later

A few hours went by. He noticed the neighbors were still outside. He also noticed they weren’t just wrapping up. They were adding more things to the fire. “I approach and ask them kindly on an ETA, trying to be as patient and understanding as possible.” They say they are almost done.

A Few More Hours Later

Another few hours later there was a raging fire outside. He described seeing the woman’s husband outside pointing at his home and yelling. Then the husband added actual campfire logs, not just leaves and twigs.

Getting Upset

“At this moment, I’m not angry, I am just very sad,” he said. He realized his dog wasn’t going to have the last day they wanted to give her. He wanted to take her somewhere else, but don’t want to cause her further stress.

Last Day Spent Inside

Eventually, he had to give up on giving the dog one last day outside. The remainder of the day was spent inside, as the neighbor’s fire continued to burn.

Still Going at 9PM

Later that night, around 9pm as the sun was setting, the dog owner went outside for a walk and noticed the fire was still roaring. He said it was left unattended, and the neighbors were nowhere to be seen.

The Dog Owner Lost His Temper

“At this moment I am now pissed off and start looking into state laws, city laws and everything in between,” he said. From this search, he learned that his city had an ordinance clearly stating that a fire pit can’t be within 50 feet of a structure.

Deciding Whether to Contact the City

The man said he could have contacted the city and had it stopped. “Simply because no matter where they place it in their backyard it will be within 50 ft of their home. But, that seems non-permanent enough.”

A Bit Late in the Day

Whatever, he did, he knew it was too late to salvage his dog’s final day. But he was too angry and upset to let the neighbors get away with ruining what should have been a perfect day.

Build a Fence?

He was already considering getting a fence installed. So, he had multiple quotes. However, he balked at the idea of a bill for $15,000. Within 24 hours, he made an expensive decision.

Fenced In

His fence will be installed within the next couple of weeks around the edge of his property. This means the neighbor’s fire pit is no further away than 10 ft from his fence, making it impossible for them to ever use it again.

Final Words of Revenge

Still reeling from the spoiled last day of his putbull’s life, he settled for revenge.

“Can’t take a single day away from your fire pit for a dying dog? Well, enjoy never using it ever again. One of my neighbors smoked me out of my dog’s last day to be outside, so I am removing their ability to smoke out anything ever again.”
