A man shared how he got his own back on a mother who tried to use him to scare her son into eating all his food.
Dwarfism
He began by saying, “I have dwarfism. This often leads to weird interactions in public, especially with kids.”
Why So Short?
He said the most common occurrence was kids approaching him and asking why he is so short. Despite having a pre-prepared response for that, they sometimes direct the question at their parents instead of him.
Embarrassed Parents
Usually, the embarrassed parents will awkwardly drag their kids away, telling them not to comment on people in public. He finds it sad but understandable.
Explanations
He prefers the parents who just say something about how some people are born that way. Whether they attempt a serious explanation, or try to be funny, it’s better than dragging them away.
Shrank in the Wash
Although people with dwarfism look a bit different, he pointed out, they’re still regular people just like everyone else. Sometimes parents tell their children, “I bet he shrank in the wash.”
Parenting Other People’s Children
He shared how he can’t stand it when people try to use him to parent their kids. He’s sure there must be better ways for parents to convince their kids to finish their plate at dinner. They shouldn’t have to point at a dwarf in public saying, “That’s what happens when you leave food on your plate.”
Didn’t Eat His Vegetables
Another common ‘joke’ he hears is parents telling their kids is, “He didn’t listen to his mommy when she told him to eat all his vegetables.” He finds this rude and humiliating.
Differences
He went on to say, “This teaches your kid that differences are a bad thing and that people are at fault for their differences or disabilities. It just annoys me.”
Acting Out
The man recalled an experience from a few days earlier. “I was in public and a kid who was maybe 4 or 5 years old was acting out. His mom was struggling to keep him under control.
Tell Santa
The woman pointed and told her son that he was one of Santa’s elves. He said, “She claimed I was watching him and would tell Santa about his behavior.”
The Nice List
The kid’s name was on a key ring on his backpack, so the man told him, “It’s okay, Hunter, you’re already on the nice list. Santa told me you’re getting an iPad this Christmas.”
Excited
Hunter was overjoyed. However, his mom was not, most likely because she now had to explain why Santa hadn’t delivered as promised, or else face an expensive Christmas.
Not Tall
Readers responded with what they tell their children. One woman preferred to keep it simple and tell her children that people with dwarfism are small because they aren’t tall.
All Shapes and Sizes
Another woman said she told her kids, “People come in all shapes and sizes.” This worked as a simple explanation for her son.
Staring
Of course, kids are curious and will still stare, and this isn’t limited to Dwarfism. One father shared how he couldn’t get his 4-year-old to stop staring at a guy in a wheelchair.
It’s Natural
He said, “When we were standing on a sidewalk, waiting for a parade or something, my son started to ask questions. I shushed him – and the man said that it was okay, at his age, questions were natural and understandable.
Happy To Talk
A woman recalled when she was a child and saw a woman who was in a wheelchair. “She told me she’d had an accident and was really hurt, but that she was getting better. She then told my mom that she had no family or friends and that everyone avoided her for fear of staring.”
Children Rarely Care
Another person pointed out that young children rarely care or give much thought to the things that adults worry about. He shared an experience of adults trying to explain a gay uncle, and an aunt who was a lesbian. All he and his brother cared about was their uncle’s cool car.
Learned Behaviour
The common agreement from those reading about the man’s experience of living with Dwarfism, was that children should be encouraged to ask questions about people who are different. The answers teach them and shape their views later in life.
