A man shared what happened when he was berated for not working on his day off, and how he got his own back on his manager by leaving.
Only Helping Out
He began by saying, “Guess what happens when you write up your best employee after he came in to help on his day off.”
Over Ten Years
He worked at the small business for over ten years. Most of the time it was okay, but near the end, it became a much worse place to work.
Senior Employee
Other than management, he was the most senior employee, and by far the most productive. He was always training new hires, working extra hours, and helping in other departments.
Days Off
It wasn’t unusual for him to come in for a couple of hours on his day off to take care of backed-up paperwork and general housekeeping of his department. This did wonders for keeping the department running smoothly, especially when they were busy.
Management Approved
He said the management knew about these extra hours and approved. They saw the value this brought to the company.
The Holidays
He recalled, “Going into the holidays, they were absolutely slammed, as usual. Orders were backing up, and it was all hands on deck, extra hours, full tilt.”
60-Hour Week
After another 60-hour work week, he had a couple of days off. On his 2nd day off, he decided to go into work for a few hours. He knew his coworkers were likely too busy to be taking care of the smaller tasks.
About to Leave
While he was finishing up and about to leave, his manager said, “Quit messing around, get back out there and do your job.” He assumed the manager didn’t know it was his day off.
Leaving in 5 Minutes
He replied, “Sorry, it’s my day off, I’m not scheduled to work this shift. I’m just helping out, and leaving in like 5 minutes.”
No, You’re Not
That’s when the manager said, “No you’re not. Get out there and do your job.”
Going Home
The man refused, insisting that he was going home. He knew he would be in trouble the following day, but was already tired from the previous week.
The Next Day
The next day, as predicted, he was brought into the office, dressed down, and written up for insubordination. But he said, there was something his employers knew, but either forgot or didn’t care about.
Financially Stable
He said, “I’m quite financially stable, as I work in a high-demand industry, and my wife also has a fantastic well-paying job. So, I didn’t need the job as much as most people.”
About to Be a Dad
He was also about to become a dad, most likely after the holidays. So, right after the manager finished talking down to him, he handed him the write-up to sign.
A Letter
He said, “I signed his write-up, and handed it back, along with an envelope with a short letter inside.” “What’s this?” the manager asked.
Two Weeks’ Notice
He told the manager it was his two weeks’ notice. That’s when the back paddling began.
Apologizing
The manager was apologetic, then asked if he would at least finish the holiday rush. Then the boss came in and offered a raise if he stayed. He turned it down.
New Hires
Now his former employers had to get through the holidays without their most reliable worker. It would take at least 2 or 3 new hires to cover his duties and unofficial overtime.
Enjoyed the Holidays
Meanwhile, he could enjoy the holidays without stress, and help prepare for the arrival of their baby. He would start looking for work again when he was ready.
Good Luck Finding a Replacement
He finished by saying, “I only gave my two weeks instead of quitting on the spot to give my co-workers enough warning to not completely blindside and bury them. Ultimately, the boss will struggle to find someone to do the same work for the same pay.”
