Colorado Representative Lauren Boebert is cosponsoring a bill to designate the AR-15 rifle as the ‘National Gun’ of America. This proposal comes in the aftermath of the rifle’s involvement in multiple mass shootings. The Congresswoman has been met with a wave of criticism from her constituents, who expressed their anger and concerns by writing letters to the Denver Post.
The AR-15-National Gun Act
The New Bill was sponsored by Alabama Representative Barry Moore and cosponsored by Boebert and George Santos. Moore posted on X (Twitter) to announce the new Bill: “Today I unveiled my Bill to make the AR-15 the National Gun of America. We must send a message that we will meet every attack on any of our constitutional rights.”
“National Gun” of the United States
The full title of the Bill reads, “An AR–15 style rifle chambered in a .223 Remington round or a 5.56x45mm NATO round is hereby declared to be the National Gun of the United States.”
Is It “A Cruel Joke?”
A letter published in the Denver Post by Andy Wiessner, one of Boebert’s constituents, asked if the Bill was a “cruel joke.” Wiessner wrote, “The bolded quote above is the entire text of H.R. 1095, a bill introduced in Congress on Feb. 17 and cosponsored by our Congresswoman, Lauren Boebert. One of her cosponsors on the Bill is none other than George Santos, the congressman who faked virtually every aspect of his life. Is this a cruel joke?”
AR-15 Is a “Weapon of War”
“The AR-15 assault rifle Boebert wants to make our “National Gun” is a weapon of war,” Andy Wiessner’s letter continued.
Bullets Designed to “Fragment in the Body.”
“Its bullets are designed to tear human flesh to pieces by “yawing,” tumbling, or fragmenting in the body, thereby causing maximum internal bleeding and tissue damage,” he explained in his letter.
Letter Written by a War Veteran
“I am a Vietnam War vet, and the M-16s we carried there were an offshoot of the AR-15. The Army always told us it was the best rifle in the world because of how efficiently it killed ‘the enemy,’” Wiessner stated.
“National Gun” Used in Mass Shootings
Andy Weissner tragically illustrated in his letter, “Recently, the AR-15 has been used in mass shootings in Texas and many other places. As we see almost nightly on TV, it has shredded the bodies of innumerable men, women, schoolchildren, and even babies,”
Innocent Victims Are Not “The Enemy.”
“These innocent victims are not ‘the enemy,’ Congresswoman Boebert, and our peace-loving nation does not need a ‘National Gun,’” Wiessner concluded.
Politicians Too Timid to Act
Another of Boebert’s constituents wrote in the Denver Post, “…How this ethic meshes with ‘the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness’ remains open to debate. The public is overwhelmingly in favor of regulations, and politicians are too timid to act,” wrote Robert Porath from Boulder.
AR-15 Became “America’s Most Dangerous Weapon”
TIME recently published an article by Solcyre Burga titled ‘How the AR-15 Rifle Became America’s Most Dangerous Weapon. The article reads, “The Allen Mall shooting on May 6 was the 199th mass shooting of 2023, marking the most recent incident in which a gunman chose to use an AR-15 style rifle during the tragic event.” Nine individuals, including the gunman, lost their lives in the shooting, with the youngest victim being a three-year-old boy.
Maine Mass Shooting – Eighteen Dead
In October of this year, US Army reservist Robert Card shot and killed 18 people at a bowling alley and a restaurant in Lewiston, Maine. An extensive manhunt for the 40-year-old was initiated, and he was later discovered deceased at a recycling facility where he had been recently employed. Card’s body was found in close proximity to several firearms within a trailer that had not been searched previously.
36th Mass Killing in the US in 2023
The AP confirmed it as “the 36th mass killing in the United States this year, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University.”
Card Reportedly Died of a Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound
ATF special agent Jim Ferguson, in charge in Boston, informed The Associated Press that the firearms used in the shooting had been acquired through legal means.
Multiple Firearms Were Found
Although Ferguson refrained from disclosing their specific make, model, or exact quantity, numerous firearms were confiscated. “There were a lot more than three,” Ferguson said.
Youngest Victim Was 14 Years Old
Aaron Young, at the age of 14, was the youngest among the victims. A high school sophomore, he was at the bowling alley with his father, who tragically lost his life alongside him.
Boebert Attempts to Repeal Gun Control Provisions
In May, Congresswoman Lauren Boebert published a press release promoting the introduction of a new Bill called the ‘Shall Not Be Infringed Act’ in an attempt to repeal the gun control provisions. The Bill is still being debated.
“No Amount of Gun Control Will Eliminate Evil”
Congresswoman Lauren Boebert said, “I unapologetically support the Second Amendment. No amount of gun control will ever eliminate evil in our society, and unsurprisingly, the data has shown time and again that gun control does not decrease gun violence. Just look at Chicago or New York, where gun control has created criminal safe havens since evildoers know their victims will be unarmed.”
Gun Control Will Leave Americans Defenseless
“It is ironic that the same people who are calling to defund the police also want to leave everyday Americans defenseless. I will always stand against this nonsense and stand for law-abiding Americans and the Constitution,” she concluded.
“It’s Bordering On Perversion”
People took to social media to raise concerns over the recent announcement to make the AR-15 America’s ‘National Gun.’ One user posted, “It is bordering on perversion. Gun nuts are weird.”
