A man shared his story of how he dealt with his neighbors allowing their dog to keep him awake all night, by turning the tables back on them.
A Challenge
He began by saying, “Dealing with noisy neighbors can be a challenge. One particular neighbor of mine had a situation that seemed almost too absurd to be true.”
Frustration
The neighbor’s incessantly barking dog had become a source of never-ending frustration for him. He described the sleepless nights as a waking nightmare.
Night Shifts
The neighbor worked night shifts, and it seemed like their dog never slept at all. He said, “From approximately 7pm until the ungodly hour of 5am, the dog’s barking became a relentless soundtrack of the night.”
Dogs Bark
In his efforts to address the issue, he knocked on their door numerous times, hoping for a reasonable conversation about the disturbance. Their response was, “Dogs bark. What do you expect?”
Annoyed
He said that this annoyed him. The quip made him feel as if his own concerns were completely unwarranted.
It Continued
As the sleepless nights continued, he struggled to concentrate during the day. This made him irritable. He knew he had to find a way to stop the barking.
Divided by a Wall
The man explained that their houses were closely situated, with a shared divided wall separating the two properties. This proximity exacerbated the issue, as the barking sounded as if it was coming from within his own home.
Endless Barking
Fed up with the seemingly endless barking, he decided to take matters into his own hands. He used his smartphone to record the dog’s vocal performance for an entire day.
Empathy
As he listened to the never-ending chorus, he couldn’t help but feel a twinge of empathy for the poor creature. He knew it wasn’t the animal’s fault.
Intolerable
However, the situation had become intolerable. So, his empathy didn’t extend to his neighbors.
Payback via Playback
He said, “At around 9am, when the neighbor finally brought their dog inside and settled in for some sleep after a nightshift, I placed my phone into a dock and played the recording on my stereo system at full volume.”
Aimed Towards the Neighbors
“The speakers were strategically aimed toward them. Creating a deafening symphony of their own dog’s barks,” he explained.
The Next Morning
The next day, the neighbor called over the wall separating their gardens. They were beyond furious, demanding that he silence his dog in future.
Not My Dog
He calmly responded, “It’s your dog, not mine. I recorded him, just so you could experience firsthand what dogs do. I’m merely playing the radio at a perfectly allowable city time, and I plan to do this every day.”
Getting the Point
The act of playing back their own dog’s barking seemed to have finally driven the point home. It wasn’t long before they started bringing their dog inside during the night, putting an end to the canine symphony that prevented him from sleeping.
Noise Problems
Others were quick to respond with their own experiences of noise problems. One woman recalled regularly calling her neighbors at 3am, as they seemed oblivious to the sounds of their dog barking. She said that they soon got the message.
Animal Cruelty
One man described a case of animal cruelty by his neighbors who locked their dog in a cage all day. The dog whined and barked all day as a result.
Selfish Dog Owners
Another man said, “One idiot neighbor lets their dog stand right across the road from my bedroom window and bark constantly. Their house is maybe 300 yards back from the road and where the dog actually stands, so they can’t hear it.”
A Dog Whistle
One commenter suggested a dog whistle as a subtle hint for neighbors who let their dogs barking disturb other people. He said this worked on his neighbors, after he used the dog whistle whenever their dogs were barking in the yard at all hours.
