A woman shared her story of how she turned the tables on the mechanic who tried to scam her, by publicly embarrassing him.
Judged on How She Looks
She began by saying, “I (26f) do not look like I would know a single thing about cars. 5’3 with long blonde hair, a soft girly appearance, and an eternal baby face that makes me look about 15-16 years old.”
The Car She Drives
The car she drives is a rather beat-up-looking 2004 Avalon. Her dad and brother are both mechanics.
Not a Mechanic
She admitted that’s not her profession, but she’s learned a lot from them and is very comfortable working on cars. The woman said she only mentioned her appearance because it’s pretty common for mechanics to assume that she’s an idiot about cars.
Overwhelmed With Life
She explained, “A while back, I was pretty overwhelmed with life and didn’t have a good space to do it, so I took my car in to get the oil changed. The place offered a free-of-charge ‘head to toe’ inspection for any repairs that might need to be made.
Knew Her Car Was Fine
The woman knew her car was fine. She had recently changed the air filter and brake pads. Rotors had maybe 40k miles on them and were in great condition, and a new serpentine belt too. She just didn’t feel like changing the oil herself.
She Checked
“Before I went to the shop I actually checked my air filter and it was, in fact, pristine,” she said. “Also, I usually call my dad while I’m working on my car so we can chat. He knows what repairs or maintenance I’ve done and that my car is well taken care of.”
The Inspection Results
After they changed her oil, the guy came back with the “inspection results” on a clipboard and was holding her air filter. He had a grave look on his face like something was very wrong.
Busy Place
The woman said this was a very busy place and there were lots of customers in the waiting room. He told her that he needed to go over the results because her car was about to be completely broken down and also not safe to drive.
List of Repairs
To avoid this, the car would need several repairs done ASAP. The repairs included new brake pads, new rotors, new calipers, replacement serpentine and drive belt, new air filter, new compressor or the AC wouldn’t work (a heavy threat in the middle of summer in FL), and a couple more generic things.
The Filter
She said, “He showed me my air filter that was filled with dead grass, a dead wasp, some dirt, and hair. He really scooped some rubbish off the shop floor and put it in my new air filter to try and freak me out.”
The Cost
The total quote was about $1500 worth of work. She said, “He told me it would be more expensive anywhere else but he was willing to give me a deal.”
Buying Some Time
“So I immediately start buying myself time by asking some basic questions that I knew he would have to explain,” she recalled. ”I nodded at him all wide-eyed while I came up with a good way to respond to what he was doing.”
Texted Her Dad
She discreetly texted her dad and told him she was calling in a second and to just play along. She told the guy, “Omg, that’s so scary, I can’t believe I was driving around like that. Thank you so much for caring.”
Called Her Dad
She said she didn’t have the money, so would need to call her dad real quick to see if he could help her out. Then proceeded to enhance her dramatic performance by even working up a few tears.
On Speaker Phone
The woman put her phone on speakerphone for the mechanic and all the other customers to hear. Then she gave her dad a whole sob story about how she needed money for the car again.
Really Bad
He asked what the repairs were and how much. She responded with, “I don’t know, but it sounds really bad because he says that it’s dangerous. Dad, I can’t be without a car. What am I going to do?”
He Listed the Repairs Again
The mechanic rattled off all the repairs to her dad who played his part perfectly. He made comments such as “Oh wow”, “Mmhmm”, and “Oh my goodness, I’m glad you caught this so she’s not in danger anymore.”
Handed the Phone Back
He mechanic handed the phone back and she dropped the facade and started laughing really hard. As soon as her dad heard, he started laughing too.
Can You Believe This Rubbish?
She said “Dad, can you believe this rubbish? Get this, he brought me my new air filter I just put in to show me how dirty it was. He pulled stuff off the floor or something and rubbed it on there.”
Everyone Was Laughing
“Dad and I continued to crack up, “ she said. “The audience in the waiting room was also cracking up. Scammy Mechanny was beet red and completely at a loss for words with his head down and stuttering in response.”
Vacuum This Please
She handed him her air filter and told him to go vacuum it out and to let her see it before he put it back in. She sat and watched him put it back once it was clean, and also watched him pull her car out to make sure he didn’t do anything horrible while she wasn’t looking.
