The office of president should be occupied by someone who is an honest and moral person, and Donald Trump doesn’t fit that description, former House speaker Paul Ryan has said.
Biden 2024 Win Prediction
Ryan — a Republican who was speaker from 2015 to 2019 and ran for the vice presidency on a ticket with Mitt Romney in 2012, losing to Barack Obama and Joe Biden — predicted that in a Trump-Biden matchup, the incumbent Democrat would win again.
‘Fresh Blood’
Ryan, 53, was speaking at an event at the University of Wisconsin, where he said the United States needed fresh blood, suggesting that Trump, 77, and Biden, 80 are too old for the job of president — a view held by a growing number of people, particularly concerning Biden and his recent gaffes and stumbles.
Trump ‘Will Lose’
Referring to the presidential vote in November 2024, Ryan said: “The party that puts the first fresh face forward wins this election.” Primaries to select GOP and Democratic candidates take place early next year. Ryan added: “If the race is between Trump and President Joe Biden, I think Biden wins.”
Trump ‘Doesn’t Meet Standards’
Ryan continued at the event in his native Wisconsin: “I think leaders should endeavor to be honest, ethical, moral people who try to set standards for themselves and lead by example across the country. Donald Trump doesn’t try to do any of that. He does the opposite, frankly. So I just don’t think he’s fit for the job here.”
‘Swing States Will Decide 2024’
Ryan also predicted the voters in swing states — where there are around the same number of supporters for each party — would decide the 2024 presidential election, particularly people in urban areas.
‘No Suburban Vote for Trump’
Ryan said, referring to the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol: “Do you think those suburban voters like Donald Trump more since January 6? I mean, good grief. They didn’t vote for him this last time; they’re not going to vote for him again.”
Attack on Democracy
Rioting broke out at the US capitol on January 6, 2021, following Trump’s re-election loss to Joe Biden the previous November. Trump refused to accept defeat, claiming the election had been stolen from him with “rigged” ballot boxes, and he urged his supporters to protest at the Capitol. Five people died in the violence and over 1,000 were arrested.
Trump’s Troubling Time
Trump is the favorite candidate for the GOP nomination in next year’s presidential race, with a clear lead of about 50 points over his Republican rivals. But he is fighting off indictments relating to the 2020 election — allegations that he tried to overturn the result and block the transfer of power — as well as alleged mishandling of secret government files. Trump is also battling civil cases including an ongoing trial in New York that has found “convincing evidence” that years-long fraud was committed at the Trump Organization. Prosecutors are asking for a fine of at least $250 million, and several of the company’s trading licenses have been revoked.
Republican ‘Fools’
Ryan also had harsh words for his Republican colleagues, saying they tarnished the party’s image over the debacle in September surrounding a looming government shutdown — which was eventually averted. Ryan was speaker during a record 36-day government shutdown in 2018.
“We look like fools,” said Ryan. “We look like we can’t govern.”
New House Speaker
The House has also been embroiled in controversy over its speaker — after Republican Kevin McCarthy was given the boot in an historic Republican-Democrat vote that left it leaderless and largely impotent for weeks. Successive votes for other candidates failed, until a new speaker, Mike Johnson, also a Republican, was chosen.
Moves to Impeach Biden
The new House speaker has wasted no time restarting an impeachment investigation into President Biden and his family’s business dealings. Republicans allege that Biden illegally received money from overseas entities, while Democrats maintain none of it went to the president, only his son Hunter, and so there is no reason to impeach Biden.
Moves to Strike Trump off Ballot
Meanwhile, liberal groups have launched court cases in two states in an attempt to remove Trump from the 2024 presidential election ballot. His acts surrounding the 2020 election and subsequent rioting at the Capitol triggered the insurrection clause of the Constitution that means he’s not eligible to run for the White House, the groups allege. Trump’s campaign says the clause does not apply to the president of the United States, simply because it doesn’t mention the office.
