Three years may be a long time, but that’s how long it’s taken former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani to file a lawsuit against President Joe Biden for a slur he made against him at a presidential debate.
Lawsuit Announcement
The 79-year-old former presidential candidate said in a livestream on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he had filed the legal case against the American president.
“I’m suing Joe Biden,” said Giuliani, adding that the commander in chief was a “pathological liar” who had falsely called him a “Russian pawn.”
Seeking Damages
The former mayor, who frequently uses X to call for President Biden to be impeached, said he was seeking compensation for damage done to his legal practice as well as his personal reputation following the claim by Biden. And he said in his broadcast that Biden’s allegation was “completely baseless and utterly untrue.”
Contentious Presidential Debate
The lawsuit is based on the final presidential debate between candidates Biden and Donald Trump in Nashville in 2020 in which Biden alleged that Russia was providing Giuliani with fake information to help Trump get re-elected.
Russian ‘Interference’
Biden claimed during the sparring match with Trump that Russia was meddling in American politics and its election system.
“They’re interfering with American sovereignty. That’s what’s going on right now. They’re interfering with American sovereignty. To the best of my knowledge, I don’t think the president’s said anything to [Russian President Vladimir Putin] about it,” Biden said.
Giuliani a ‘Russian Pawn’
Democratic candidate Biden continued at the debate: “His own national security adviser told him that what is happening with his buddy — well I shouldn’t, well, I will — his buddy Rudy Giuliani. He’s being used as a Russian pawn. He’s being fed information that is Russian, that is not true. And then what happens? Nothing happens.
“And then you find out that everything is going on here about Russia is wanting to make sure that I do not get elected the next president of the United States because they know I know them, and they know me.”
A Kremlin ‘Connection’
Giuliani has admitted to meeting Ukrainian lawmaker Andrii Derkach, who has been sanctioned by the US Treasury Department for his role as an “active Russian agent.” President Putin had “influence” over Derkach, according to an assessment in 2021 by the US intelligence community. Giuliani has denied anything untoward happened between him, Derkach and the 2020 presidential election, telling CNN in an interview, “Who cares?”
Biden Win
President Trump lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden but refused to accept the result. Instead, he branded it “stolen” from him, alleging that the vote was “rigged.” That led him to urge his Republican supporters to mass on the US Capitol in Washington, DC. Rioting broke out and five people were killed.
2020 Election Fallout
Dozens of people were arrested over the US Capitol attack and many have been jailed, including the leader of the far-right Proud Boys, who received a prison term of 18 years for helping orchestrate the protest. Trump has been indicted for allegedly attempting to overturn the election results and prevent the peaceful transfer of power from happening.
‘Witch Hunt’
Trump denies the election interference charges against him, saying the indictment is a “witch hunt” by Democrats trying to stop him getting back to the White House. Trump, 77, is running for the Republican Party nomination for the 2024 presidential election, as President Biden, 80, seeks a second term.
‘No Hunter Biden Retaliation’
In his X event announcing his lawsuit against President Biden, Giuliani also said he hadn’t taken the legal action out of revenge for Biden’s son, Hunter, filing a lawsuit against him.
Hunter Biden Suit
Hunter Biden, 53, filed a lawsuit against Giuliani in September that alleges the former mayor stole and manipulated data on his digital devices. He allegedly broke federal and state laws, in California, regarding computer privacy and that Hunter Biden had suffered “total annihilation” of his digital privacy.
Giuliani Hacking Claim
Along with his attorney Robert Costello, Giuliani is accused of “hacking into, tampering with, manipulating, copying, disseminating, and generally obsessing over data that they were given that was taken or stolen from” devices belonging to Hunter Biden.
‘Failure to Return Hunter Data’
Lawyers for Hunter Biden say in their suit against the defendants: “Plaintiff has demanded Defendants Giuliani and Costello cease their unlawful activities with respect to Plaintiff’s data and return any data in their possession belonging to Plaintiff, but they have refused to do so.”
