A woman shared how her manager created a rule that staff had to pay for personal printing at work, and falsely claimed all the money went into a Christmas party fund.
Lots of Rules
She began by saying, “Many years ago. I worked for an organization providing front-line customer service. It was a decent place to work but our manager had lots of rules.”
Personal Printing
One of the rules was that employees could not do any personal printing using the printers at work. If they did, they were expected to pay $0.50 per page for black-and-white printing and $1.00 per page for color.
Hot Desking
She explained that desks were not assigned. Meaning, that employees could be sitting at any desk, depending on their assigned tasks for the day.
Interviewing
One day, she was interviewing for another job within the same organization, but at another location. Before the interview, the manager at the other location asked her to print a copy of her resume and bring it with her as their printers were down.
Printed at Work
The woman told them it wasn’t a problem, figuring she’d print it at work. After all, it was work-related.
Manager Beat Her to The Printer
The desk she was sitting at that day did not have a printer at it. The closest printer was located near her manager’s desk. Before she got to the printer, her manager was standing there.
Charged for Printing
The woman’s resume was printed before the managers documents. When she saw it, she said, “This looks like a personal print job. She was made to pay “$2.00 for four black and white pages.
Paid Up
She said, “I begrudgingly paid up. I asked her what happened to the money, and she said she always put it in the Christmas party fund.”
A Few Weeks Later
A few weeks later, she was sitting at the desk with the printer at it. It was lunchtime and everyone except the manager agreed to go to a nearby restaurant for lunch.
Forgot Her Wallet
She walked out of the building and realized she had forgotten her wallet. So, she quickly ran back inside to get it.
Something Was Printing
When she reached the desk, she could hear the printer going. She was curious about what was being printed, as it was spitting out page after page.
100 Pages
She said, “I quickly glanced at the pile and saw at least 100 pages printed in color, announcing a ‘Sweet 16’ for Trista, our manager’s daughter. It very obviously belonged to my manager.”
Manager Was Surprised
Her manager came out of the bathroom a moment later and seemed shocked to see her standing there. The employee picked up the pile, passed it to her and commented that the Christmas party fund was going to be getting a big boost.
Uncomfortable Silence
The manager didn’t reply. Although, she looked really uncomfortable.
District Manager’s Visit
A few weeks later, the district manager made his quarterly visit. He talked about the upcoming Christmas party and how excited he was for it.
Time for Revenge
That’s when the woman decided it was time for some petty revenge. She raised her hand and said, “Just wondering how much we’ve accumulated this year for the Christmas party from print jobs?”
Confused
The district manager looked so confused and asked her to explain what she meant. She recalled, “I told him my manager’s rule. He said he’d have to review this.”
Rule Abolished
The next day her manager sent an email out saying the printing rule was something she was misinformed on and it would be abolished immediately. The employee hit ‘reply all’ and asked what would happen to the already accumulated funds.
Pizza Was Suggested
Another employee said they should have a nice healthy fund for a pizza lunch by now. Everyone else was in agreement.
Ten Pizzas
The woman said, “The next day, I heard my manager ordering 10 pizzas for everyone’s lunch. Also, she used her own personal credit card to pay for it all.
Pocketing the Money
She guessed the manager was pocketing the printing money all along. She finished by saying, “But it was fun making her sweat, then having to spend nearly $300 the next day to make up for it.”
