A man shared how his boss overreacted to his supposed mistake by cc’ing everyone into the email that berated him, and how he embarrassed the boss in return.
Always Berating Him
He began by saying, “My boss was a bit of a perfectionist. If anyone made a mistake, he would spot it and berate them.”
Didn’t Care Who Heard
The boss never asked the employee he was berating to speak in private. He would just yell at them right there, no matter who was listening.
Beta Testers
He said, “We recently launched a project to a select group of beta testers. I’m not paid to be on call or work on weekends, but late on Sunday, I got an email from the boss.”
CC’d Everyone
The boss had cc’d everyone involved in the project, that the entire site was down. He insisted the man get it sorted urgently, as this makes the company look bad.
Ranting
The email went on to rant, bringing up several other errors from the last few years. Many of which the man had no knowledge of and was sure the boss had either fabricated or confused him with other employees.
Screenshot
There was a screenshot attached of the problem. This made it easy for him to quickly see what the issue was, and confirm it was not a result of his own errors.
Didn’t Need to Open His Laptop
He was looking at the email on his phone, but didn’t even need to open his laptop to figure it out. He said, “I was also mildly peeved at the tone of the email and I didn’t think including everyone plus the janitor was really necessary.”
Reply All
So he chose reply-all and pointed out that the reason the boss was getting that error was because he had typed the wrong website into his browser. He then included the right website link.
Sheepish Email
The next day, he received a sheepish email. The boss claimed it was actually one of the beta testers who had sent him the message about the website not working and the screenshot.
Just Forwarded It
The boss said that he had just forwarded it, and how glad he was that it wasn’t actually a problem. However, there was no apology for the public berating or the mention of previous fictitious mistakes he had apparently made.
Very Petty
The man finished by saying. “Yes, it was very petty, but I got a kick out of it. Also, the boss calmed down a little after that and wasn’t always so quick to berate his employees.”
Best Part of My Job
One commenter shared his own story of working in IT. He said, “I relish these emails, especially from senior leadership. I text my coworkers and my team and they all laugh hysterically, then watch for the reply. It’s literally the best part of my job.”
Never Asked for This
Another person said they use a similar approach to a boss cc’ing everyone to tell him he never asked for this. He said he forwards the initial email to everyone that shows his boss specifically asking him to carry the task he claimed he never asked for.
If You’re Wrong
One man said, “If you call me out to the entire world and you’re wrong, then everyone you thought needed to know that I had messed up… Well, they clearly need to know that you messed up now.”
Perhaps You Forgot
Another commenter said, “I use the, ‘perhaps you forgot. I had to go back through the email chain myself to confirm. Here it is for your reference as well’ type of response.”
Not Reading the Manual
One woman recalled the issue at her former work-place was often down to someone not reading instructions. She said, “Almost always, it came down to them not reading the manual, and it was always fun to point this out on large email chains, where they’d cc’d as many as all employees from three different companies.”
Don’t Mess With IT Workers
Another woman said, “I never understood why people are jerks to IT. They literally allow you to do your job. Besides, if you’re nice to them, it’s way easier to get help when you need it.”
Take Care of The Nice People First
Someone else agreed, saying, “Exactly, We take care of those who aren’t on our blacklist first. You can expect to be put on the blacklist and have any SLA met at the last possible second if you treat us badly.”
Not Hard To Be a Decent Person
Another commenter said, “It’s really not hard to be a decent person. Our office IT guy left for another job several months ago, but he was awesome.”
