Helper
He began by explaining that his job title was “helper”. For someone who was supposed to just be helping, he had a ridiculous amount of work.
His Co-Workers
He described most of his co-workers as technologically illiterate boomers. This is something he used to his advantage.
Copy and Paste
“One guy would spend half his day copying items and pasting them into another program we use. He seemed so proud of himself.”
Wrote a Program
The man shared how he wrote a program to do this automatically, but did not tell the guy or anyone else. He would just run it occasionally as part of his responsibilities.
Time-Saving
He estimated saving about 15 hours of work every day with several other time-saving programs. However, one of his managers seemed unaware of how long these tasks would take manually, or that they were being automated.
Three People
He guessed it would take three people to do all these tasks manually. Yet, he was only being paid one person’s wage.
Team Meeting
The manager showed up at a team meeting and took notes. This was not something he usually did, so it seemed strange.
A Simple Mistake
Someone brought up the name of one of the customers. Not recognizing the name, the man gave a description of another customer, asking if that’s who they meant.
A Week Later
A week later, the manager was behaving oddly around him. For example, ignoring him during group conversations and scoffing at all his comments.
Rough Week
He said, “I was having a really rough week looking for some extremely important files. People were yelling all day. I was exasperated.” This was causing him anxiety attacks.
Considering a New Job
The man considered finding another job. One where he was under less scrutiny and wouldn’t be made to feel anxious all the time.
Found a File
After finding a file, hidden away in their system, the man opened it and found his manager’s notes. That’s when he discovered the company wanted to assess whether he was an essential worker, or if they could save money by firing him.
The Notes
One of the notes read, “Thought a 4’10, 24-year-old female patient was a 300 lb bearded man. Clearly atrocious attention to detail.” This was in response to him mistaking who his colleague was referring to in the meeting.
Enough
He had enough and decided to show the organization exactly how they would manage without him. He came up with a plan.
A Vacation
The man was already stressed, so decided it would be a good time to take his vacation days. He let his boss know and set up an automatic email reply telling anyone who emailed to contact that specific manager instead.
Turned Off Automation
Then he turned off all the automated tasks, even the occasional ones. He received multiple calls on Monday morning, but didn’t answer.
Personal Email
He said, “I got a long email to my personal account from my boss on Thursday night of the first week. It explained that it had become apparent he was one of their valuable employees, and asked him to reach out to discuss a raise.
A Big Raise
The man asked for a $10,000 raise, and assurance that the manager would stay out of his face. He also received an in-person apology from his boss.
Resolution
He said he’s much happier now, left to get on with his work and they still don’t know about the automated tasks. The extra money helps too.
