A Woman shared a story from her student days, when she identified which roommate was stealing from her and their other housemates. She found a way to get her own back.
Good Credit
She began by explaining that because she had better credit than her three other roommates, she put the internet/TV under her own name. Otherwise, the deposit would have been $600.
The Gift Card
The cable company offered her a $300 Visa gift card for signing up. As she was the one taking the financial risk, she considered it to be hers. Two months later, she had to call them because the gift card never arrived.
Sent and Spent
The cable company said they sent it a few weeks earlier. They were eventually able to tell her that someone used it at several stores near her house.
Angry
This made her angry and caused her to suspect one of her roommates. However, she didn’t know which one.
Another Theft
A few weeks later, roommate 2 complained that his $200 birthday gift card for Target had gone missing. His mom still had the receipt, and the store told him that someone used it at the Target near their student house.
Narrowed it Down

A Lost Wallet
A couple of weeks after that, roommate 3’s wallet disappeared. She was turning the house upside down looking for it. It had to be somewhere in the house because her car key was attached to her wallet, and her car was parked at the house.

The woman said, “Roommate 3 was absolutely frantic. She was sobbing, screaming, hyperventilating, etc. Throwing things everywhere and just having an absolute meltdown while tearing the house apart.”

The woman said it seemed odd, admitting its stressful to lose something of value. But she and the others were genuinely concerned about how she was reacting.
The Fourth Roommate
She said she initially suspected the fourth housemate. He had not had anything stolen. But that suspicion quickly rediverted.
Found in Car
A few days after that, she found roommate 3’s wallet in the trunk of her car. She said, “We had gone to get groceries together and I guess she just laid it in the trunk while we were unloading.”
Found the Thief
She opened it to confirm that it was her roommate’s wallet. Both used stolen gift cards were in there. She realized the reason the roommate had a meltdown was because she was afraid the others would find out she was the thief.
Left it There

A Costly Punishment
Roommate 3 couldn’t get new keys without the title, which was in the glove box of her locked car. So she spent about $500 replacing her DL, title and keys. She also couldn’t drive her car for two weeks.
Moved Away
When the woman moved out of state, she took her roommate’s wallet with her. Then she tossed it in the trash several months later.

She said it’s been 10 years says the incident. All of them have since been to therapy and are no longer terrible human beings.
