Conservative retired federal judge J. Michael Luttig, who was also the key adviser to former Vice President Mike Pence, has declared that “there is no Republican Party.” He also contends that Trump’s desire for prosecution was a deliberate move to create a platform for his 2024 presidential candidacy, a political tactic he views as making a “mockery out of America.”
GOP Has Convinced Trump of His Political Immorality
In a recent op-ed written for the New York Times, the former conservative judge wrote, “The former president’s behavior may have invited charges, but the Republicans’ spineless support for the past two years convinced Mr. Trump of his political immortality,”
No Political Consequences
The former judge also stated that Trump’s supporters had given him the “assurance that he could purloin some of the nation’s most sensitive national security secrets upon leaving the White House” and assisted in his belief that they belonged to him to do with “as he wished” without facing any “political consequences.”
Ride the Charges to the White House
“Indeed, their fawning support since the Jan 6 insurrection at the Capitol has given Mr. Trump every reason to believe that he can ride these charges and any others not just to the Republican nomination, but also to the White House in 2024,” Luttig wrote.
Trump’s Republicans Are Responsible
Mr. Luttig declared that Republicans were as responsible as Trump for his indictments and would also be responsible for any of Trump’s prosecutions.
“Putative Leader” Best Hope for the GOP
“The stewards of the Republican Party have become so inured to their putative leader, they have managed to convince themselves that an indicted and perhaps even convicted Donald Trump is their party’s best hope for the future,” Luttig continued.
It Is Beyond Saving
He further angrily stated that if Trump’s indictment under the Espionage Act and Trump’s actions to conspire to overturn the election “fails to shake the Republican Party from its moribund political senses, then it is beyond saving itself. Nor ought it be saved,”
No One Should Turn Away From Jan 6
“No American ought to turn away from Jan 6, 2021, until all of America comes to grips with what befell our country that day, and we decide what we want for our democracy from this day forward,” Luttig warned.
Trump Knew He Had Lost the Election
In addition to his op-ed, Luttig appeared in a CNN interview with Poppy Harlow and was asked if Trump could argue in court that he believed he won the election. Luttig denied this argument would work “because the evidence is overwhelming that the former President knew full well that he had lost the election.”
In the Face of “Overwhelming Evidence”
“And the standard will be, could a reasonable person have believed otherwise in the face of the overwhelming evidence to the contrary,” he stated.
There Is No Republican Party.
Luttig further told Harlow, “American democracy simply cannot function without two equally healthy and equally strong political parties. So today, in my view, there is no Republican Party to counter the Democratic Party in the country,”
American Democracy Is in Grave Peril
Luttig continued, “And for that reason, American democracy is in grave peril.”
He Is “A Clear and Present Danger.”
The former conservative judge testified before the House Select Committee in their initial investigations on Jan 6. In his testimony, Luttig called Trump “a clear and present danger to American democracy.” Luttig has delivered many warnings concerning the former President, the state of the Republican Party, and the risk Trump poses to the nation’s Democracy.
Judge Believes Trump Forced the Prosecution
In a transcript in August, provided by the Washington Post, Luttig was interviewed by David Shipley. Luttig told Shipley, “…The former president actually forced this prosecution, this prosecution and this trial, this historic trial of a president of the United States,”
The First Time in American History
He stated that “for the first time in American history,” Trump forced the prosecution by his attempt to overturn the election, which he had lost “fair and square” and “prevent and obstruction the Joint Session from counting the electoral votes to determine the presidency of the United States of America’”
Trump Made “A Mockery Out of America”
Luttig told Shipley of the Washington Post, “This had to be, David, if lest Donald Trump, in the end, be allowed to make a mockery out of America, the Constitution of the United States, and the rule of law.
Trump Thought Prosecution Would Aid in 2024 Election
“As far as we can tell, he wanted to be prosecuted in order that he could run for the presidency in 2024, essentially on the platform that he had, in fact, won the 2020 election,” Luttig explained.
Prove to Americans That the Election Was Stolen
“and he would prove to the American people that he had–that that election had been stolen from him by rewinning the White House in 2024,” he added almost prophetically.
The “Idiocy of the GOP Demagoguery”
Users came out online in support of the former Judge’s comments, with one stating, “Judge Luttig has been honest & upright from the beginning of the idiocy of the GOP Demagoguery.” “Conservatives without prudence are just selfish radicals,” another posted.
