In a remarkable display of party rivalry, top Republican candidates openly challenged Donald Trump’s presidential legacy at the Miami debate. Trump was absent from the stage. Instead, he chose to host a separate event, fueling further debate among his critics and supporters.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a key figure among GOP contenders, expressed strong opinions about Trump’s no-show at the debate. “Trump owes it to you to be on this stage and explain why he should get another chance,” DeSantis stated. He argued that Trump has a responsibility to face public scrutiny.

Criticism of Trump’s Promises and Performance

DeSantis did not hold back in his criticism. He directly questioned Trump’s unfulfilled promises. “He should explain why he didn’t have Mexico pay for the border wall,” DeSantis said. He also highlighted issues like national debt and Trump’s promise to “drain the swamp.” He believes these issues were not adequately addressed.

Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina Governor, also had criticism. She started by acknowledging Trump’s past achievements. “He was the right president at the right time,” she said. However, she quickly shifted to critiquing him, especially concerning the national debt incurred under Trump’s administration.

The Manhattan Institute reported that Trump’s actions and policies significantly contributed to the national debt. This $7.8 trillion increase is a focal point of Haley’s criticism. This clearly shows her concern for future generations burdened by this financial legacy and her belief that this needs to be remedied.

Haley also served as Trump’s ambassador to the UN. She commented on Trump’s stance on Ukraine and other foreign issues, labeling his recent positions as weakened. She stressed the need for a more financially responsible leader, suggesting there needs to be an “accountant in the White House.”

Voter Reactions to Trump’s Wall and Economic Policies

Some users were quick to argue that Trump did have some successes. One user said, “Don’t need a wall with remain in Mexico policy. That being said, renegotiating the trade deal with Mexico generated more revenue for the U.S. to pay for the wall – something previous presidents were too scared to do. The deficit was 90% COVID spending approved by Dems and Pelosi’s power of the purse. I appreciate the desperation, but perspective is needed.”

Economic Downfall Under Trump’s Reign

Voices critical of Trump’s presidency claim that “The Trump economy sucked.” This damning statement reflects some users’ deep dissatisfaction with his economic policies, especially considering the staggering $8 trillion debt added. This was a situation that largely unfolded before the pandemic.

Comparing Fiscal Accountability in Different Administrations

In the debate over fiscal responsibility, one user contrasted Trump’s tenure with Biden’s. They argued that Trump “added $8T in debt” and that “most [of this] was pre-COVID.” This opinion criticizes Trump’s administration for its lack of transparency, saying, “At least with Biden, there is accountability on where it is going.”

Highlighting Trump’s Alleged Failures

Some comments were less about policy and more about perception. One such opinion was, “Hey, MAGAs, they’re using facts Libs have been telling you about how big a failure Trump was and still is!” This demonstrates the narrative some hold regarding Trump’s perceived inadequacies as a leader.

Tax Cuts and National Debt Concerns

The issue of tax cuts under Trump was also a point of conflict. One user noted, “Part of that debt was in the tax cuts for the rich.” While they didn’t deny the economic benefits under Trump, they argued these cuts contributed significantly to the national debt and questioned their overall economic benefit.

Mexico’s Stance on the Wall Payment

Reflecting on the unlikelihood of Mexico paying for the wall, one user asked, “Would you pay for Trump’s Wall if you were the Mexican Government? I think the answer is ‘no way.’” This reflects widespread skepticism about the feasibility of such a proposal. They believe Trump’s suggestion of building a wall is simply not possible.

Trump’s Debate Style Critiqued

Trump’s style in debates has been a subject of critical analysis, with some users expressing their hatred for a lack of traditional debating tactics. One user remarked, “Trump doesn’t debate. He rants, rages, and lashes out.” They suggested a perceived departure from reasoned discourse. They view Trump’s approach as overly emotional and aggressive.

Transparency Questions Over Wall Fundraising

Some users felt skeptical about Trump’s financial management. One user expressed curiosity and suspicion, asking, “Trump and Bannon raised 50 million from MAGA donors to build the wall. Wonder where that money went?” They showed broader concerns about accountability and using the sizable funds collected.

GOP Debates Are Missing the Trump Factor

In the context of GOP debates, some individuals feel that these events lack appeal without Trump’s participation. A user highlighted this idea, questioning, “First, does anyone watch these debates without Trump?” This viewpoint suggests that Trump’s controversial or charismatic presence might be critical in drawing public interest.

The Wall Promise

Trump’s promise that Mexico would finance the border wall has been amusing for some. Reflecting on this perspective, a user commented, “Only an idiot ever believed Mexico would actually write a check for the wall – we thought it was great humor.” To some Trump supporters, this promise was nothing more than a joke.
