A man shared how an unfair review from an Airbnb host led to him getting a full refund.
Friend’s Wedding
He began by saying, “I recently attended a friend’s wedding a few hours away from home. My girlfriend and I decided to get an Airbnb so she could bring her dog.”
Nice Place That Accepted Dogs
They found a nice place that allowed pets, left work on the Friday, and arrived late afternoon. 30 minutes later, the owner showed up to see how they were doing while they had the dog on the porch.
Small Talk
The man made small talk with the owner, who then mentioned that they didn’t indicate they were bringing a dog. He explained, “I felt bad, as it was an honest mistake, and I’d never lie to someone to get out of paying the pet fee.”
Offered To Pay
He offered to pay the $25 fee there and then. However, the owner refused to take the money, and said that he loved dogs, before eventually leaving.
The Wedding
They attended the wedding, which took a few hours. Then they went back to the Airbnb, picked up the dog, and took him for a long walk.
Thorough Clean Before Leaving
He said, “We didn’t think too much else about it, but when we left, we decided to give the place a much more thorough cleaning than was in the instructions. The dog didn’t chew any furniture or leave any other damage or mess, at least none we didn’t clean up.”
5-Star Review
In his mind, the trip was a success, and the Airbnb was a great fit. He received an email from them to leave a review. He responded with a 5-star review that said the house and the owner were great.
The Owner Blasted Him
The man said, “Then I saw his review of me, and a private message where he blasted me for not telling him that I was bringing a dog, how dogs cause them so much more work, and how we shouldn’t leave dogs alone in the house. This didn’t sit well with me at all.”
Thought Everything Was Okay
He thought everything had been handled in person on the first day. This was the first he knew of any issues.
Would Have Paid the Pet Fee
He would have happily paid for the pet fee. He claimed there was no indication anywhere on the posting that they couldn’t leave the dog alone for a few hours while they attended the wedding. Nor did the owner say that in person.
Responded in the Chat
He responded to the owner in the chat and reminded him he had offered to pay the fee, and was never told about not leaving the dog. Airbnb couldn’t do anything about the review since it didn’t violate any of their policies.
A Violation
The man said, “My girlfriend pointed out that hosts aren’t supposed to show up to the property unannounced. I had no idea and figured this was his property and he was allowed to show up, at least to check in with the guests.
Wouldn’t Usually Be an Issue
This wouldn’t normally be an issue, he explained, especially since it was a very cordial interaction. The owner’s cheap shot with his review made him decide to do the same.
He Told Airbnb Support
He reached out to Airbnb support to tell them about the owner’s unannounced visit. They forwarded this to their security team. He answered a few questions about the interaction, and they spoke to the owner
A Week Later
A week or so later, they let him know that the owner violated their policy. They refunded him for 2 days of the stay, which came to about $200.
Maybe He Will Treat Guests Better
He finished by saying he hopes the owner will treat guests better in future. “It’s not difficult to let them know what you expect upfront. It’s the easiest way to resolve or avoid problems.”
False Accusations
Other Airbnb users shared their own bad experiences. One said, “I had a host claim we stole some cups. Apparently the cleaning lady didn’t look in the dishwasher. They had asked us to leave them there.”
A List of Chores
Another said, “They asked me to put the garbage bins out on the curb, clean, put the linen in the washing machine, and water the plants. I’m on holiday man, I could’ve done that at home and not paid for it.”
Prefer to Stay In Hotels
A woman replied, “This is why I prefer hotels most of the time. After all the charges they add on, a hotel is sometimes cheaper, and I have my room cleaned every day.”
