Mike Pence was unable to get past MAGA supporters’ lingering fury over his unwillingness to help then-president Donald Trump cling to power following his 2020 election defeat and that alone was the reason his 2024 presidential bid imploded, a GOP donor has said.
Pence’s Downfall
Businessman Art Pope said Pence’s refusal to do Trump’s bidding and reject the 2020 election results in the Senate, where Pence was president, was his downfall among MAGA supporters – Trump’s “Make America Great Again” campaign slogan.
Knew From the Start
Pope told The Associated Press: “From the very beginning, I think his supporters knew that the challenge was going to be some of the hardcore Trump supporters were never going to forgive him for upholding the Constitution on January 6, 2021.”
Solid Hurdle
Pope, a multimillionaire who donated to Pence’s campaign, added: “On the other hand, there were a group of Americans who were never going to forgive him for being in the Trump administration to begin with. He just could not overcome that.”
Lack of Voter Support
In a statement on X, formerly Twitter, announcing his withdrawal from the GOP primary race, Pence acknowledged his lack of support among voters.
“After traveling the country the past six months, it has become clear… this is not my time,” he said.
Always Grateful
The former congressman and governor added in his statement on X that he was grateful to have had the honor of running.
“As we leave this campaign, we do so with grateful hearts. I will always be grateful for the opportunities my family and I have been given to serve this country,” he said.
Dismal Pence Polling
An average of national polling gave Pence just 3.8 percent of voter support compared to a massive lead of 56.9 percent for his former boss, Trump. The closest contender to the ex-president is Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, whose own campaign for the GOP nomination has also imploded and is currently at 14.1 percent in the polls.
Harsh Reaction
People reacting to Pence’s announcement of the end of his 2024 campaign were not so kind to the former vice president. “Took you way too long to figure that out,” wrote a person on X under the handle Sunchaser.
Time’s Up
Another person, Johnny Jeff, was more forceful, saying Pence’s refusal to try keep Trump in power was why no one was voting for him. “Your purpose under heaven was to protect the 2020 election. It will never be your time again,” he said.
Disgusting Traitor
Still, another person on X, writing under the handle shan, slammed Pence.
“Good riddance, you disgusting traitor,” they said.
2020 Election Debacle
Joe Biden defeated Trump at the ballot box on November 3, 2020 but Trump claimed he won and refused to concede. The stalemate culminated in rioting at the US Capitol the following January 6 after Trump urged his supporters to protest the election outcome. Five people died in the violence and around 1,000 were arrested.
Ongoing Fallout From 2020 Vote
Trump was indicted earlier this year for his alleged attempts at trying to overturn the 2020 election results and stay at the White House for another term. He has further been criminally charged with trying to block the transfer of power to Joe Biden. Trump has said he is not guilty and that the charges are purely attempts by Democrats to keep him from becoming president again.
Trump Reaction to Pence Campaign
Speaking at an event in Las Vegas soon after Pence withdrew from the GOP nomination race, Trump called on his former deputy to back him in the presidential contest.
Endorse Me
Trump told attendees at the Republican Jewish Coalition: “I don’t know about Mike Pence. He should endorse me. He should endorse me. You know why? Because I had a great, successful presidency and he was the vice president.”
“Very Disloyal” Politicians
Trump appeared to take a swipe at Pence while speaking in Las Vegas, telling the crowd that a number of politicians had been “very disloyal” to him. That led to one person in the audience to shout, “Traitor! Traitor!” Trump responded: “He could have done what he could have done, right?”
Trump and Biden Race?
Should Trump become the GOP candidate for the 2024 presidential election, he would likely face off against President Biden, who is heading the Democratic field by a wide margin. Trump, however, would face significant challenges along the way, as he is fighting a total of four federal indictments and is also in civil court over fraud and other charges.
