Donald Trump’s outrageous boasts and wild claims know few bounds, and now the former president who is campaigning for a return to the White House is comparing himself to global anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela.
New Hampshire Rally
Trump was speaking at a rally in New Hampshire on Monday when he made the extraordinary comparison between himself and the late South African president who was at one time jailed for 27 years over his opposition to the country’s apartheid system of racial segregation.
Trump’s ‘Own Persecution’
The former Republican president sought to portray himself to the New Hampshire crowd as a victim of persecution by Democratic operatives owing to a large number of federal and civil cases he’s battling — just as Mandela was persecuted by the South African regime.
Trump as Mandela
The billionaire property businessman, 77, suggested he was carrying the weight of Democratic persecution on his shoulders for the good of the country. “I don’t mind being Nelson Mandela because I’m doing it for a reason,” he told delighted supporters at the rally.
US vs Us Realization
Trump continued what was a rambling speech in New Hampshire by telling the crowd that he had recently realized the spelling of the pronoun “us” was the same as “US” for the United States.
“You know, you spell us right? You spell us U-S. I just picked that up. Has anyone ever thought of that? A couple of days [ago] I’m reading, and it said ‘us’. And I said, you know, if you think about it, ‘us’ equals ‘U-S,’” Trump explained as the crowd went wild.
Trump the ‘Genius’
With supporters chanting “USA, USA,” Trump continued his speech by suggesting he was a “genius.”
“Now if we say something genius, they’ll never say it. You know, we get 25, 30, 40, 50, 80,000, 100,000 people to the speeches. They’ve never said Trump’s a great speaker,” he said.
‘No Acknowledgement’
Trump bemoaned what he said was others’ failure to recognise his “genius” or that he was a “great speaker.”
“I’ve never heard it. I said to my people: ‘Do you think they’ll ever acknowledge [it]?’ I must be doing okay. Except I’m a very handsome person. So I guess a lot of you want … They want to sit look like a beauty pageant. It’s amazing.”
Jesus as House Speaker
Trump also told those at the New Hampshire rally that getting elected by members as the House speaker was a process so tough that the only person who could do it was the son of God.
“That four threshold is very tough. It’s a very tough thing, no matter who it is. There’s only one person that can do it all the way. Do you know who that is? Jesus Christ,” he said.
Trump Race
Trump was also in New Hampshire this week to file papers for his candidacy in the Granite State’s primary in January. He’s up against a field of Republican candidates who pose little threat, given his wide lead in the polls, of nearly 50 points above rivals like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
Big Legal Hurdles
But these days Trump finds himself in the courtroom almost as often as on the campaign trail. He’s been indicted four times and is facing a total of 91 criminal charges relating to the 2020 election he lost to Joe Biden and the storing of classified government documents.
‘Will Go to Jail’
Trump faces the bleak prospect of being jailed for decades if found guilty in the criminal cases, but he remains unfazed.
Last week, Trump told a rally in Iowa that he was “willing to go to jail if that’s what it takes for our country to win and become a democracy again.”
Other Trials
The former president is also in court on civil charges, including that he, members of his family and executives at his Trump Organization property empire colluded to commit fraud. A judge at the trial, which is ongoing in New York City, has found “convincing evidence” that fraud was committed, by exaggerating the value of various Trump properties to get cheap loans. Several of Trump’s business licenses have been revoked as prosecutors seek a fine of at least $250 million.
Gag Orders and Fines
Trump has been on the receiving end of two gag orders, in the fraud trial and election interference case, and has been fined twice in a week for breaching one of them. Last week, the judge in the New York case fined Trump $5,000 for failing to remove a social media post that attacked a senior court clerk, and this week he imposed a fine of $10,000 on Trump for attacking the judge and a witness while speaking to reporters outside the courtroom.
