“Just being in Southern California over the last couple of days, my wife and I have met three people who have been mugged on the street.” He added: “That would have never happened ten or 20 years ago. In Florida, we back the blue [and] we support the men and women of law enforcement.”

“The unwillingness to take responsibility, Ron DeSantis take responsibility, for his own crime rates in his own major cities, I find that curious,” Newsom continued. “I find that curious, not surprising and I offer that as a point of contrast and consideration, that is all.”

Some social media users have suggested DeSantis hopes to break new ground with voters by debating Newsom.  This comes as his campaign and support has struggled against former President Donald Trump.

Prior to announcing his bid for the White House, DeSantis repeatedly faced public criticism from Trump who took to calling him “Ron Desanctimonious”. DeSantis repeatedly said he was unbothered by Trump’s comments and would often say he was focussed on addressing the issues facing the country rather than name calling.
