A furious father has gone viral on TikTok after posting a rant about his doctor. In the video, which has over 17 million views, the father tells the story of when a doctor asked his nine-year-old son whether he identified as a boy or a girl.
It Was Just a Routine Physical
In the viral clip, the father claims the first question the doctor asked his son was whether he identifies as a boy, a girl, or a non-binary individual. He said, almost spitting his words: “I just got off the phone with my wife, who took my nine and seven-year-old boys to the doctor today. My nine-year-old son went in first and the first thing this woman asks him is if he identifies as a boy, a girl, genderfluid, or nonbinary.”
He Accused the Doctor of Indoctrination
The father – known on TikTok as jotojavin – went on to accuse the doctor of “planting a seed” in his son’s head, cleaning not understanding that gender identity isn’t something that can be pushed onto someone. He spat: “He’s never heard of any of that before. You’ve been dealing with him his whole life. He’s clearly a boy’s boy. Are you trying to plant a seed in his head? The only thing I can be thankful for is that my wife took them instead of me.”
He Insulted Those Who Disagree With Him
The father explained that his wife spoke to the doctor after the question was asked, which he was thankful for; if she hadn’t, the doctor would’ve asked his seven-year-old son the same thing. Then, still spitting his words, he insulted all those who disagree with him: “To the people out there who think there’s nothing wrong with this, there’s something wrong with you.”
Commenters Were Divided
The father’s viewers were divided, with several criticizing him for his thoughts on the matter. “I used to be a tomboy growing up. You know what I got asked constantly? ‘Are you a boy or girl?’ I answered and moved on. The end,” one individual wrote. Another, seemingly making fun of the TikToker’s lack of understanding of the way gender works, said: “Plant a seed that does what?”
Some Pointed Out the Importance of Such Questions
Some commenters pointed out the importance of doctors asking children, rather than their parents, questions. “They also ask if your kid feels safe in their home,” one viewer wrote. Several medical professionals talked about how such questions are now mandatory in a lot of practices.
Plenty of People Agreed With the Father
Despite the backlash, plenty of viewers agreed with the TikToker. “I just did a pre-registration for my son with the same questions on the form. I skipped it. I refuse to answer based on common sense,” one viewer wrote. Another replied: “And if your kid were trans or non-binary, you would be grateful. Your experience isn’t the only one that exists.”
Debate Raged Between LGBTQ+ Allies and Those Concerned for Children
Debate raged on in the comments between those who agreed with the father, those who didn’t, and those who were unsure. “You are right! This is getting out of control! Demand an explanation,” one commenter said. Another replied: “The doctors are just being respectful and accepting. They didn’t ask a sexual question or anything.”
The TikToker Got Involved in the Comments
The father didn’t shy away from the raging debate. “You don’t like kind, respectful doctors?” one viewer – Millie – commented. “Who were they respectful of? My son didn’t think it was respectful, my wife didn’t think it was respectful, so who were they being respectful to?” the dad replied. Millie bounced back: “He was trying to be respectful to your child but apparently he’s being raised by hateful transphobes, so he’s screwed anyway.”
The Viral Clip Comes After Arkansas’ Ban on Gender-Affirming Care for Kids Was Struck Down
The video comes shortly after a federal judge blocked Arkansas’ ban on gender-affirming care for children. The law was temporarily blocked in 2021, but the stay was made permanent in recent weeks. The US. District Judge Jay Moody ruled that the ban discriminated against transgender people and violated the rights of doctors.
The Judge Looked at the Evidence
The judge justified the decision with modern research and evidence. He wrote: “Rather than protecting children or safeguarding medical ethics, the evidence showed that the prohibited medical care improves the mental health and well-being of patients and that, by prohibiting it, the state undermined the interests it claims to be advancing.”
The State’s Attorney General Will Be Appealing
Immediately, the state’s attorney general – Tim Griffin – said he’d appeal. “Judge Moody misses what is widely known: There is no scientific evidence that any child will benefit from these procedures, while the consequences are harmful and often permanent,” he wrote on Twitter.
Despite Judge Moody’s Good Work, Transphobic Laws Are Still Rife
Despite Judge Moody’s ruling, several other states have brought in laws that either restrict or ban gender-affirming care for minors. With a plethora of evidence in support of such care being ignored by individuals such as Griffin, it’s hard to predict when – and if – things will change.
