On Tuesday, a judge ruled that Donald Trump had committed fraud for years while building his real estate empire. This empire saw him make millions of dollars and revered as a business mogul ahead of his stint in the White House.
Judge Orders Trump’s Companies Be Dissolved
Judge Arthur Engoron ordered that some of the former president’s companies be removed from his control and dissolved as part of his ruling.
He also ordered that some of Trump’s business licenses be rescinded, making it significantly more difficult for them to do business in New York. Engoron also called for an independent monitor to oversee the Trump Organization operations.
New York Attorney General Says Trump “Engaged In Years Of Financial Fraud”
The civil lawsuit, against Trump, was initially brought forward by New York Attorney General Letitia James.
“Today, a judge ruled in our favor and found that Donald Trump and the Trump Organization engaged in years of financial fraud,” James said in a statement.
“We look forward to presenting the rest of our case at trial.”
Reason For The Judge’s Ruling Ahead Of The Trial
James had asked the judge for a summary ruling before the trial began and argued that finding certain facts to be beyond dispute would speed up the trial.
Judge Engoron’S Ruling
In the 35-page ruling, the judge found that Trump and his company had deceived banks, insurers and other entities by massively overvaluing his assets and exaggerating his net worth. He added, the overvalued figures were used to make deals and secure loans.
Trump lashes out at Attorney General and Judge
Following the ruling, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, and shared an official statement where he was critical of James, the judge and argued the ruling was rooted in an agenda against him.
Trump’s Official Statement
“The widespread, radical attack against me, my family, and my supporters has now devolved to new, un-American depths, at the hands of a deranged New York State judge, doing the bidding of a completely biased and corrupt ‘prosecutor,’ Letitia James, who ran for office based on a ‘get Trump’ platform, before even knowing anything about me,” the statement read.
“My Civil Rights Have Been Violated” Says Trump
The message went on to claim the ruling was part of a wider plan to prevent him winning the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
“My Civil Rights have been violated and some Appellate Court, whether Federal or State, must reverse this horrible, un-American decision. If they can do this to me, they can do this to you.”
Trump highlights New York Crime Rate
In a follow up statement on Truth Social, Trump continued to vilify the decision and called it “a very sad day for the New York State system of justice.”
“Today’s ruling about a company that has done a magnificent job for New York State fails to acknowledge the fact that murder and all other forms of violent crime have reached record levels in New York State,” Trump said in the post.
“Can you imagine ruling against me for having done business perfectly, and yet letting people go on a rampage on the sidewalks of New York?
Trump Claims Companies Fleeing New York
“This is the judicial conduct that is forcing thousands of companies to flee New York for other environs, while virtually nobody comes back to the City or State. A very sad day for the New York State system of justice.”
“Never seen such hatred toward one person by a Judge,” Trump’s Son Says
The former president’s son, Eric Trump, echoed his father’s statements with a Truth Social post of his own criticising the New York justice system.
“Today, I lost all faith in the New York legal system. Never before have I seen such hatred toward one person by a judge,” he wrote.
“A coordinated effort with the Attorney General to destroy a man’s life, company and their worth.
“Persecution of our family continues” Says Eric Trump
“We have run an exceptional company, never missing a loan payment, making banks hundreds of millions of dollars, developing some of the most iconic assets in the world. Yet today, the persecution of our family continues.”
Trump Inflated Trump Tower Residence Value By Over $110 Million
According to the ruling, Engoron said Trump had inflated the value of his own Trump Tower residence in New York between $114 million and $207 million, including by claiming the property was triple its actual size in square feet.
“Can Only Be Considered Fraud,” Judge says
“A discrepancy of this order of magnitude, by a real estate developer sizing up his own living spaces of decades, can only be considered fraud,” the judge said in the order.
Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Home Value Inflated Massively
In addition to this, the judge found that Trump had also inflated the value of his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida by at least 2,300%.
Statement From Trump’s Attorney
In a statement to ABC News, Trump’s attorney, Alina Habba, said they intend to appeal the decision “immediately”. She added that the Trump Organization was “an American success story.”
Trial to Decide Trump’s Penalties
The trial is currently scheduled to begin October 2 but this date is subject to change if upcoming rulings deem it fit. The trial will decide how much Trump will have to pay in penalties. James is seeking $250m in penalties and a ban on Trump doing business in the New York State.
“They Came With Love in Their Hearts and It Was a Beautiful Day” Trump on January 6th Rioters Who He Promises To Pardon When Elected
Vanity Fair recently issued a report discussing how falsehoods that would typically ruin a politician’s chance of success seem to have the opposite effect on Trump and boost his voter base and popularity.
