Donald Trump dismissed seven notable Republicans as his 2024 presidential election running mate during a speech on Wednesday.

Donald Trump Acknowledges Republican Debate

Speaking at a non-union auto parts manufacturing company in Michigan, he made references to the ongoing Republican debate that was occurring at the same time as his speech. Trump indicated that while his position as the primary Republican candidate has not been solidified, he has already ruled out his current rivals for the position of vice president.

The Republican candidates that took part in the debate were Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, former Vice President Mike Pence, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum and Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina.  

Trump Ridicules His Republican Rivals

“It’s all over television, this speech,” Trump said while speaking to his crowd. “You know, we’re competing with the job candidates? They’re all running for a job. No, they’re all job candidates.”

“They want to be in the… they’ll do anything. Secretary of something, they even say [Vice President],” he continued. “I don’t know, does anybody see any VP in the group? I don’t think so.”  

Crowd Boos After Trump Mentions Debate

As Trump mentioned the ongoing Republican debate, boos and jeers can be heard from the crowd. The former President continued to dismiss his opponents before praising the crowd.  

Trump Claims 1000s Of People Wanted To Get Inside For His Speech

“They don’t have a crowd like we have. When you look outside at the 1000s of people outside that couldn’t get in…why didn’t you build a bigger plant,” Trump said as he gestured towards a member of the crowd.  

Trump Refused To Debate For a Second Time

Trump has refused to take part in the GOP presidential debate for a second time after first rejecting to attend the first last month. The former President remains the front-runner as the GOP candidate, according to recent polling.  

Trump Ridiculed For Failure to Participate In The Debates

During the Republican candidate debate on Wednesday, Chris Christie addressed Trump’s absence. Christie took particular issue with Trump’s refusal to debate and labeled him “Donald Duck.”

“Donald, I know you’re watching. You can’t help yourself. I know you’re watching, okay?” the former Trump adviser said. “And you’re not here tonight, not because of polls, and not because of your indictments. You’re not here tonight, because you’re afraid of being on the stage and defending your record.

“You’re ducking these things… You keep doing that, no one up here is going to call you Donald Trump anymore, we’re going to call you Donald Duck.”  

Spokesperson Reiterates Trump’s Vice President Stance

Trump spokesperson Steven Cheun spoke to Newsweek after the former President’s speech and reiterated his point. When asked whether Trump’s remarks meant that those in the debate had been dropped from running-mater consideration, he said “President Trump was crystal clear.”  

Trump Had Previously Been Weighing up his Opponents For Vice President

In late July, Trump did indicate he was considering each of his Republican rivals for the vice president role if he returned to the White House. “Let them debate so I can see who I MIGHT consider for Vice President!” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, on July 31.

The former president had already ruled out Pence for consideration for vice president before he had even officially declared he would be running in the 2024 election.
