Donald Trump has been accused of only showing up to his ongoing New York civil court cases in order to play the victim and raise money from his supporters, according to an analyst.

Legal analyst Lisa Rubin has been covering the former president’s trial in New York that commenced this week. Taking to X, formerly known as X, she has reflected on the latest developments and offered her own insights into his legal troubles.

Trump’s Legal Troubles

Donald Trump faces a $250 million civil fraud trial in New York. This case stems from James’ lawsuit accusing the former president, his sons Eric and Donald Trump Jr. and the Trump Organization of filing fraudulent financial statements that inflated the value of several properties and assets by billions of dollars for financial perks.

Trump Denies Any Illegality

Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has repeatedly insisted he is innocent of all crimes he is accused of. He has gone as far as to suggest his recent legal troubles are part of a political witch hunt.

Rubin on Day 3 of Trump’s Trial

In an article for MSNBC, Rubin suggested Trump may have benefited from sitting in on the trial in New York. She said the former president told a Florida court that he could not attend his October 3 deposition in a lawsuit he filed against his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, because he planned on being in court in New York for the fraud trial. Trump’s inability to attend resulted in the deposition being rescheduled for a later date.

While this may have worked in Trump’s favor, according to Rubin, she said Trump’s attendance would allow him to achieve a number of his more short-term goals.

Trump Can Rattle His Adversaries

“He was able to physically show his contempt for — and potentially rattle — witnesses, the judge, prosecutors and New York Attorney General Letitia James herself just by being there,” Rubin said. Throughout and up to the trial, Trump has repeatedly attacked individuals involved in the case on social media.

Judge Response to Truth Social Posts

Trump’s post caused such a stir that Judge Arthur Engoron was forced to issue a gag order for both Trump and his legal team. This order barred them from publicly discussing members of his staff. This followed after Trump attacked the judge’s clerk in a now-deleted Truth Social post.

Trump Can Claim Trial Is A “Witch Hunt”

Rubin went on to say that by attending for a few days, can bolster his comments that the trial is a “disgrace” or a “witch hunt”. “Trump was also able to more credibly spin reporters that all has been going beautifully — whether or not his own lawyers or outside legal experts would concur — because he has been an eyewitness,” Rubin wrote.

Trump draws Attention

The legal analyst indicated by making an appearance, Trump is able to draw focus away from the details of the court proceedings.

Trump Held Impromptu Press Conferences

“Trump was able to distract from what actually happened in the courtroom, collapsing the usual split screen of Trump legal coverage, on one hand, and political reporting, on the other, into a single stream. Indeed, he held several impromptu press conferences each trial day where he further attacked his perceived enemies, including James and Engoron,” Rubin continued.

Truth Social Posts

The former president has also continued to galvanize his supporters by making sweeping claims about the trial, his alleged crimes, and his ongoing legal troubles. “The ridiculous A.G. case against me in New York, brought by the Racist and Incompetent Peekaboo James, is being studied and mocked all over the World. Companies are Fleeing! It, and the highly political, Trump-Hating Judge, are DESTROYING the Image and Reputation of the New York State Legal System & Courts,” Trump wrote on Truth Social early on Thursday morning.

Trump Playing Victim

Rubin concluded the most beneficial thing to Trump and possibly the most important thing was that he could now play the victim and raise money. “The leading GOP presidential candidate told reporters that he was “stuck here” defending himself when he’d rather be campaigning in Iowa, New Hampshire or South Carolina,” she said.

Rubin clarified that civil trials do not require the presence of a defendant and insisted that Trump was aware of this face. She also highlighted that James has criticized Trump during the trial for treating the procedure as a “fundraising stop”.

Trump Fundraising Email

Rubin added that after Trump left midway through day 3 of his trial, within the hour his campaign team sent another fundraising email. The email accused James of “inventing crimes out of thin air”, weaponizing the justice system against Trump and conspiring with Marxists to prevent his return to the White House.

Rubin’s Closing Thoughts on Trump

The analyst concluded: “While it remains to be seen how lucrative his two-and-a-half day courtroom stint will be, something tells me that what motivated Trump to watch hours of testimony about accounting standards was — what else? — the money,” Rubin wrote.
