After being confronted with a new report suggesting many voters of color in swing states are souring on Biden, Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) has sparked backlash for attributing the growing trend to ignorance.
The New York Times Report
CNN’s Dana Bash discussed the new report with a panel on her show, which claimed that “Black voters — long a bulwark for Democrats and for Mr. Biden — are now registering 22 percent support in these states for Mr. Trump, a level unseen in presidential politics for a Republican in modern times.”
“Racial Realignment”
Addressing Crockett on her show State of the Union, Bash read out an excerpt from the report: “In a remarkable sign of a gradual racial realignment between the two parties, the more diverse the swing state, the farther Mr. Biden was behind, and he led only in the whitest of the six.”
Crockett’s Response
“It’s really scary for me,” Crockett said of the growing pattern. “Here’s the deal, perception is reality, and so when you look at the data that was provided in this poll, it talks about how people feel… it is all about how you feel in that moment,” she continued, attempting to explain the poll findings.
An Emotional Influence
“While the facts may not align with their feelings, their feelings are dictating their reality and their reality is that they feel or they felt better when Trump was in office,” Crockett added.
The Democrats Push Back
Crockett explained that Democrats have been “trying to push back” against this, despite “some very popular African American artists out here saying things like ‘Oh, I got checks when Trump was in office. I want those checks again,’ not understanding that really came from Congress.”
A Question of Education
“So we have got a couple of things, the perception issue and then we also have an issue as it relates to civics in this country and people not understanding exactly how any of this works,” Crockett concluded.
Online Outcry
Many people on the internet lambasted Crockett for her comments. “‘Voters are too stupid and they don’t understand their betters’ is probably not a great campaign message for Democrats,” wrote Mollie Hemingway, editor-in-chief of The Federalist.
Accusations of Elitism
“The utter disdain these elitist lawmakers have for their own constituents is really mind-blowing,” criticized commentator Joe Concha, whereas journalist Miranda Devine asked, “Where did she get such a sense of superiority?”
An Insulting Approach
“Pre-Obama the Democrat’s stock response to dropping numbers in a demographic was, ‘we’ll go and listen, and try hard to earn that support,’” said columnist David Marcus, adding “Today, it is ‘they are wrong, and somewhat ignorant, we’ll show them why we are smart and right.’”
“Dismissive of Voters”
“Imagine being this dismissive of your voters? Democrats seem to think the people who they need to elect them are all stupid and incapable of understanding what’s actually happening,” claimed radio personality Mike Opelka.
Black Conservatives React
Black conservative commentators were particularly scathing of Crockett’s latest take. “In other words, according to Democrat @RepJasmineCrockett, Blacks are too stupid to understand how much better they are,” wrote Larry Elder, also a former 2024 presidential hopeful.
Double Standards
“Not too bigoted!” Elder continued. “If Trump said this, Democrats would be drawing up another article of impeachment.” Former Republican congressional nominee Jeffrey A. Dove concurred, “Once again telling the Black community that we are not intelligent enough to see what’s going on and understand it.”
What the Public Says
Conservatives online were similarly critical of Crockett. “Or they’re not as ignorant as you want them to be,” one forum commenter suggested. Another claimed that Black Republicans “see that the illegals are more important than they are.”
Democrat Lies
“The Democrats have been lying to the Black community for decades. They promised the world and delivered nothing. The fact that they are seeing it now and acting accordingly is the first sign of progress in a long time,” one user stated.
Allegations of Racism
Several forum members tried to claim that Democrats, and even Crockett herself, are racist. Someone speculated, “I think that statement would have had a better impact and response had the person that made it been white. Not only are Dems racist but I’m beginning to think their entire equity thing is about having someone be racist for them that won’t get called on it.”
Defending Crockett’s Comments
Some people felt that Crockett’s words had been misconstrued. “I’m as conservative as the net guy who’s not a neo-con, but watch the clip. She didn’t say either of those things. She never used the word ignorant, she said “don’t understand.” She didn’t say Black people, she said people,” one person said.
Enough to Sway the Vote
One commenter declared that it “Doesn’t matter if he [Trump] only has 10% of the black vote. He’ll still win with 51% to 49% of the votes in Georgia,” predicting that the latest trend could end up securing key swing states for the former president.
