California Governor Gavin Newsom has insisted that he will not be running in the 2024 Presidential election but some Democrats have questioned whether he has eventual White House ambitions.  President Biden could offer Newsom a high-profile spot at the nominating convention in order to tee up a 2028 run, should Biden win re-election, according to political scientist Thomas Gift.

In June, Biden had praised Newsom and said he was “one of the best governors I’ve ever worked with. He also called him his “buddy” at an event in Marin County, California.

Newsom publicly said he was proud of the work Biden had been doing while in the White House as he returned the compliment.  “I am here, Mr President, a proud American, as a proud Californian, mesmerized by not just your faith and devotion to this country, and the world we’re trying to build, but by your results, by your action, by your passion, by your capacity to deliver,” he said.

Thomas Gift, an associate professor who leads the Centre on U.S. Politics at King’s College London has said there is a blossoming alliance between Biden and Newsom.  Speaking to Newsweek, Gift said that the pair could mutually benefit from supporting one another’s political endeavors.  By supporting Biden in his re-election bid, the president could repay the favor to Newsom for his potential 2028 run.

At this point, Biden is looking to cozy up to just about any prominent Democrat who will go on the record lavishly praising him, including Newsom,” Gift told Newsweek. “In terms of the electoral math, Newsom doesn’t offer much to Biden given his already mortal lock on progressive California.”

However, what he does offer is much-needed pushback to a growing chorus of leaders in the Democrat party who seem to be expressing more reservations about…Biden’s bid for the White House,” Gift continued.

“One wouldn’t be surprised if, in exchange, Newsom were offered a high-profile spot at the nominating convention or some other pat-me-on-the-back gift, which could help tee up his likely 2028 run,” Gift added.

Newsom Addresses The Calls For Him To Run as President

Speaking in a “Meet the Press” interview on NBC earlier this month, Newsom put to bed speculation about his candidacy.

“I think we need to move past this notion that [Biden’s] not going to run,” he said. “President Biden is going to run, and we’re looking forward to getting him re-elected. He went on to call Biden’s time as president “one of the most outstanding administrations in the last few decades.”

Newsom Dismisses Idea Of Candidates Besides Biden

While speaking to the New York Times earlier in September, Newsom also rejected the idea the Democrats could nominate anyone besides Biden as its 2024 candidate.

Speaking to CNN’s Dana Bash earlier this month, Newsom also addressed the concerns that the 80-year-old President may be too old to run for President.  “I want a seaoned pro that knows how to get things done,” Newsom said. “I’m a little old-fashioned. I want a guy who produces results, and the results are in, it’s been a masterclass.”

“No Administration In My Lifetime That’s Been More Effective” Newsom says

Newsom also suggested the best is yet to come from Biden’s campaign team as we move closer to the election. “There’s simply no administartion in my lifetime that’s been more effective producing more substantive results and we haven’t even started the campaign. “I couldn’t imagine three years ago that this president could accomplish so much in such a short period of time.

Newsom also suggested Biden was the better candidate choice over leading Republican nominee candidate, former President Donald Trump.  “If this political season is all about a celebrity, with all due respect, we had a celebrity for four years. It didn’t go well.”

Newsom was also asked if Biden’s current Vice President, Kamala Harris, is the best choice to join him on the ticket for 2024.  “Of course she is,” Newsom replied. “The Biden-Harris administration, masterclass in terms of performance, bipartisan deals on infrastructure, bipartisan deals on guns and the debt ceiling.
