The former President has said he will not be attending the Republican nominee debates and has faced some push back from his opponents for this decision.  Former New Jersey Governor and adviser to Trump, Chris Christie, took particular issue with Trump’s absence.

Speaking during the debate, Christie insisted Trump should be attending so that he can be scrutinized for his years in the White House.  Christie’s message to Trump has since gone viral on X, formally known as Twitter. The Republicans against Trump X page shared the footage and the video has so far been viewed more than 880,000 times.

“I know you are watching, and you are not here tonight, not because of polls and not because of your indictments. You are not here tonight because you are afraid of being on this stage and defending your record.

“You are ducking these things. “Let me tell you what is going to happen. You keep doing that and no one up here is going to call you Donald Trump anymore, we are going to call you Donald Duck.”

Many social media users were quick to post their appreciation for Christie’s comments while others simply shared memes and jokes about the former President.

The Memes Followed

X user Bob Davidson shared an image of Donald Duck upright and inverted to suggest there was a visible similarity between the two. The image showed the word “Donald” written underneath the Disney icon with the words “The Donald” written underneath the inverted image.  “Donald Duck upside down is secetly Donald Trump#GOPDebate,” the user tweeted.

X user Michael Ball also praised Christie for attacking Trump as he shared the video. “Chris Christie had the best quote of the night at the #GOPDebate last night,” the social media user wrote.

Some Social Media Users Defended Trump

Despite many X users latching on to Trump’s new mocking nickname, others were quick to defend the former President and others were left divided. Twitter user GemMar333 dubbed Christie “Porky Pig” and said Trump made a positive impact in office.

“Porky Pig has the nerve to call President Trump Donald Duck. President Trump doesn’t need to defend his Presidency, everyone was living better during his four years in office,” the user wrote.

“Worst Boomer Joke” One X user wrote

Twitter user Robin Valencia commented on Christie’s joke and insisted “this was the worst Boomer joke ever. It fell flat as well.”  However, political commentator Brian Krassenstein replied by admitting while it was corny, “[he] thought Republicans were used to corny name calling.”

Joke Deemed Disrespectful

X user Reuben of Enugu simply deemed the depiction simply “disrespectful.”  X user TikiMonster was also less pleased with the joke and alleged her grandfather helped Disney with animation of the character and would not approve. “My grandfather who was the animator for Disney that drew Donald Duck, known as the ‘Duck Man’ would be turning over in his grave. Not cool,” the user wrote.

Speaking on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump addressed Chris Christie without mentioning the new nickname he had been given, rather choosing to take shots at the candidate. “Chris Christie is talking about the job he did as Governor. He had a 9 % approval rating. N.J wanted to throw the ‘bum’ out,” Trump wrote.

“Also, I built almost 500 miles of Wall (not 50, Sloppy Chris!), got Mexico to give us 28,000 soldiers (free of charge!), and had the safest and best Border in U.S. history, with record low drugs coming!” Chris Christie shared Trump’s post while also reiterating the point Trump should be participating in the debates. “Hey Donald Duck. We could have talked about this if you had the guts to show up. Keep duckin,” he tweeted.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also said the former president owed it to voters to show up to the debates. “Donald Trump is missing in action,” DeSantis said. “He should be on this stage tonight. He owes it to you to defend his record where they added $7.8 trillion to the debt that set the stage for the inflation that we have.”
