The President’s 2-year-old German Shepherd, named Commander, last week reportedly bit his 11th Secret Service member. Those on Biden’s staff have said they are struggling to make sense of these bite incidents as the dog is considered so friendly around them.

Some White House staff members have blamed the dog biting incidents on the unfriendly expressions of Secret Service agents, according to a Mail Online report.  Some staff have suggested that staffers often greet the dog with a smile while Secret Service agents tend to be less warm towards the pet.

Dog Attack Revelation

The slew of attacks or threats of attacks became known to the public in July after Secret Service emails were obtained by Judicial Watch. The information was released under freedom of information laws and one gent described the dog as “extremely aggressive. Another agent was apparently forced to take cover behind a chair.

A current member of staff has defended Commander and according to the Mail Online said “Everyone loves him.” “He’s always so friendly,” they added. The staffer added workers are often excited to find time to say hello and scratch the dog behind the ears.

The Latest Attack

Joe Biden’s dog bit or behaved aggressively towards 10 Secret Service agents between October 2022 and March 2023.  Until last month there were no more reported incidents. In this incident, a bodyguard was given medical assistance by White House personnel after they were bitten.

November 2022 Attack

In November of last year, an attack resulted in one member of the uniformed division being taken to hospital in “considerable” pain after being bitten by Commander on the arm and thigh.  Jill Biden, the First Lady, was described as being unable to control the dog, in this instance, as it charged at an agent while on a walk in the Kennedy Garden.

Due to the stressful environment of the White House, the Biden family has been working on “ways to help Commander handle the often unpredictable nature of the White House Grounds,” a spokesman for the First Lady, Elizabeth Arnold, has said.   “The president and First Lady are incredibly grateful to the Secret Service and Executive Residence staff for all they do to keep them, their family and the country safe,” she added.

Biden’s Dog’s Previous Attacks

Joe Biden’s previous dog, a German Shepherd called Major was sent to live with other family members in 2021. This was after he had bitten a Secret Service Agent.  Some White House staffers have joked about whether Commander will suffer a similar fate, according to a Telegraph report.

Social Media Response

Some X, formerly known as Twitter, users have commented on the latest attack and Commander’s reputation for biting Secret Service Workers.  Some users have indicated that 11 incidents is far too many while others have questioned whether these Secret Service Members are engaging in behavior that results in an attack.

“Joe & Jill Biden are to Blame,” Says One X user

“In my opinion Joe and Jill Biden are to blame for the behavior of Commander,” user Clueless1deux wrote. “Their older German Shepherd named Major also bit many people. Neither the District of Columbia nor Delaware have a “one bite” law. The Bidens have been breaking the law. Again.”

“How Many People [Biden]?” X user Issues Advice to President

President Biden…bruh…how many people are you going to let your dog bite before you do something about it?” User LarryBoston1236 wrote on X.  “I’m not saying you have to put him down but perhaps you should keep him away from people…just a suggestion.”

X User’s Defend Biden’s Dog

“When I read that Biden’s dog bit a Secret Service guy the first thing I thought was ‘What the hell did that guy to do to make the dog bite him,’” user Allareblessed2 wrote on X.  “I guess it doesn’t take much to amaze you. This is a rescue dog and the White House is a high-stress environment,” user Gophuk wrote on X. “If the Secret Service can’t take a dog bite for Biden how are they going to take a bullet?”

Uncertain Future for Commander

Due to the frequency of incidents, the future of Commander remaining in the White House remains unclear. Some commentators have indicated Commander is becoming a workplace hazard and more serious measures need to be taken.

Commander Bites Becoming A Safety Issue

“This isn’t a Secret Service thing. This is a workplace safety issue,” former Secret Service agent Jonathan Wackrow told CNN “There’s uniqueness here where it’s the residence of the president of the United States, but it’s also the workplace for hundreds, thousands of people,” Wackrow said.  And you can’t bring a hazard into the workplace. And that’s what is essentially happening with this dog. One time you can say it’s an accident, but now multiple incidents, it’s a serious issue.
